A delightful feel-good tear jerker April 12, 2004

When I first saw Cheyenne Warrior, it was an afternoon matinee on TV. I was enchanted! It is a delightful tale set in the mid-west during the American Civil War and it tells of the devotion of a Cheyenne warrior chief, Hawk (Pato Hoffmann) to the beautiful, recently widowed (and heavilly pregnent), white woman, Rebecca Carver (Kelly Preston) who saved his life. As the story unfolds, so too does the tentative relationship that develops between them. Sadly, it is a relationship that is doomed from the start as they come to realise that between them stands an insurmountable cultural divide.pThe DVD has most of the critical story lines (much of which lies in subtleties) but it is badly cut. There are scenes missing which add weight to the story - such as when Rebecca (Preston) is talking to her husband and he is asking her if she is disappointed in him, she replies that she is disappointed, but not in him. She wants a house, nothing much, just a home for the baby she is carrying. Another missing scene is the one just after Hawk returns to his people. Rebecca is putting some clothes away in the drawer. She takes out the photograph of her husband, examines it for a moment, puts it away, and then fondly strokes the clothes she had cut from Hawk (when he had to have his wounds tended). pThis movie hardly has a cast of thousands and is clearly a fairly low budget contribution, but it does work well. One thing puzzles me, however. I am absolutely astonished that Pato Hoffmann does not get the star billing that he so richly deserves. He is, after all, the eponymous hero! He has a major role in the film that is equal to that of Kelly Preston and he tackles it with all the aplomb you would expect from a star performer.
