2 out of 5 stars Ponderous 'psychological thriller'.   August 24, 2000

Despite this director's best efforts and some decent production values, this is an essentially dull film intersperssed though it is with repeated scenes of gratuitous blood-letting. Jack Jones (in his movie debut)produces a fascinatingly bland performance as troubled pop- star 'Nick Cooper', not helped by a meandering script and some cack-handed love scenes with Pamela Stephenson. There is some effort at a 'whodunnit', complete with perfunctory red-herrings, but the plot is irratatingly flawed from the outset : how, for example, does the killer know that Cooper is going to stay at that paticular country house? Questioning the plot of any Walker film is churlish though, and misses the point, for the entertainment value of this film (and the sole reason for my rating of two stars) is entirely based in the performance of Sheila Keith as 'Mrs.B'. She is underused here, but (as in her other Walker films) quite brilliant nonetheless. It is worth buying this video for her performance alone - but be prepared to wade though some pretty turgid nonsense along the way.
