Amazon.co.uk Review With hairy warts, a stern-looking unibrow and one extremely protruding buck-tooth, INanny McPhee/I is a wonderfully comedic substitute for Mary Poppins in this entertaining family fantasy. By loosely adapting Christianna Brand's INurse Matilda/I children's books of the 1960s, Oscar-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson (ISense and Sensibility/I) has also given herself the plum role of Nanny McPhee, who can tame even the most unruly children with a tap of her magic walking stick. P Her latest challenge is the bratty brood of a recent widower Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), who's under pressure to find a new wife or lose his much-needed allowance from wealthy Aunt Adelaide (a tailor-made role for Angela Lansbury). His love for scullery maid Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald) remains unspoken as he wincingly woos the eagerly merry widow Mrs. Quickly (Celia Imrie), but Brown's raucous rugrats have a plan to make things right, especially after they've come under the benevolent influence of Nanny McPhee, whose peculiar brand of discipline works wonders for everyone involved. P Both quintessentially British and universally appealing, this wildly colourful comedy (thanks to a bold palette of costume and production design) was capably directed by Kirk Jones, whose appreciation for comic actors was equally apparent in his critically acclaimed 1998 comedy IWaking Ned/I. With just a hint of darkness to offset the whimsy, INanny McPhee/I offers a splendid match of director, cast and material, guaranteed to please IWallace Gromit/I fans and anyone else with a taste for British zaniness.-- IJeff Shannon/I

"He's marrying a Scullery Maid?" December 31, 2008 This is such a Family Classic, But its enjoyable for anyone family or no family, Child or Adult.Couples, or families, or people who live by themselves, its perfect for everyone!br /br /Mixed in with alot of Comedy, and Light Situations, and a happy endin, it makes a lovely evening to lay on your sofa grab some popcorn and chill too.br /br /The Wonderful and Beautiful Plot Is where the children's mum's passed on, and The Father is in trouble tryin to look after them, and the children scare off their 17th Nanny, after being very very naughty, and it's a right chaos situation. No more nannys were willing to work for him.br /Until one night, it got so bad, and the children were downstairs in the kitchen making a mess, and chaos! After Nanny Mcphee Arrived, they swoar an oath to each other to get rid of her like they got rid of the rest. But They failed. Nanny Mcphee, was a Nanny, But not just any Nanny. She was a Special Nanny with Magic. In the Film, she learnt she had 5 Lessons to teach.. "1: Got to bed when they're told, 2: Say Thank you And Please, 3 Get up dressed When they are told, 4 Listen, 5 Do as they are told."br /With the magic, comedy, and traumatic situations.. This film is enchanting.. 10/10br /Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Kelly MacDonaldbr /br /Now, some might see this film as a Film based on those Television shows about wheres the has a family thats out of shape, and they need a proffessional to help them out. It's nothing like that at all! It's a movie with a story other than the children need to be taught how to behave..
Nanny McPhee May 24, 2008 I bought this movie because it was on the TV. I enjoyed it with Nanny McPhee teaching the kids some manners. Nanny McPhee stands for no foolhardiness and doesn't let the children away with any nonscense. She even tells the cook to make them soup which looks rotten and gives them measle medicine with lumps moving about in it. My favourite part was when she gave Mr Brown the fright of his life each night she kept coming to see him. The part at the begining when Mr Brown meet's Nanny McPhee, he thinks she's strange looking and almost jumps out of his skin but he invites her in reluctantly.br /Mr Brown's Aunt is a nasty woman but at least she is paying the rent. br /The woman who Mr Brown is forced to marry is a bit over the top and it's clear Mr Brown doesn't fancy her but she fancies him.br /In the end Mr Brown marries the young Scullery Maid Evangeline who he seceratly fancies anyway. We see Nanny McPhee looking better here and looking like a normal person and looking younger.br /br /I give this film 5 stars.
A must buy movie! February 22, 2008 I do not regret I bought this DVD, even though I did not know what the story was about. The children loved it and they watched over and over again. I enjoy it as much as them.
Nanny McPerfect November 1, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Oh ho. Your initial reaction would be - whats a 24 year old liking a film like this for? It's a kids film, and its not right for a twentysomething young adult male to like this sort of thing. Well, I say sod you then. For I loved Nanny McPhee, hands down. I thought the story, the acting, the comedy, the music, it was all spot on and it takes its place rightly up there with my most favourite films. Sorry. br /Let us start on the plot. Okay, so it seems from a distance to be a rip off of Mary Poppins. Its not at all like the it, though. Don't let anyone suggest it. Yes, its about a Nanny, and yes, it's a family film that pushes all the right buttons, but no, its not the same thing. Good, that's that over with. It's a fantastically traditional fairy tale with all the right ingredients - wicked stepmother, kids, handsome prince and absolutely stunning princess. Only they're not prince and princess, they're adoring father and cuddle-able scullery maid.br /Colin Firth exudes so much charm that I challenge the most hardened cynic not to smile at his fumbling persona and...niceness. Kelly MacDonald is superb as the maid who adores the kids and thinks that the poor father simply doesn't notice her (which is obviously not true). In fact, let me stand up for myself a little. Accuse me of being an old romantic because this film makes me cry - but in defence of my masculinity, I think Evangeline is quite simply stunning, gorgeous, beautiful, hot, fantastic...I could list every word in the thesaurus, but I shall not.br /Guest appearances from Derek Jacobi, Imelda Staunton and even Angela Lansbury simply pepper the supporting ensemble with brilliance. But I'm now going to wax lyrical about the simply divine Emma Thompson. Starting off in the film as a witchy nanny with warts, a big nose and a rather rotund behind, she loses her ugliness as the film progresses in accordance with the movement of the plot, and as she does so starts to display that wonderfulness that you come to expect from her. Her performance is a classic - up there with Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins, Maggie Smith in Hook, the Pigeon Lady from Home Alone 2; those women that you remember from your childhood film watching and smile and feel that warm buzzy feeling. I only hope that some kids of this generation remember Emma's wonderful character.br /Nanny McPhee, in my eyes, is one of those very rare things. A modern classic. I cannot praise it more. It's a whole five stars. Ten out of ten. I can't fault it. Not even for a second. br /I've seen it several times. I've cried in happiness, every single time. Call me pathetic, but...sometimes a good old fairy tale with a happy ending is exactly what we need. br /
One for the child in us all July 3, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I watched this film with my partner and found it to be an absolute treat.br /br /This film is aimed at children but anyone who likes a fun film will enjoy this.br /br /Emma Thompson is brilliant as the title character and her acting is superb. The children in the film all play their parts brilliantly and are very beleivable as the little brats they play.br /br /The plot is a bit predictable but then you expect that from a kids film and this film is not the right choice if you want intricate plot twists but it is the right choice for simple family fun!
