Amazon.co.uk Review The plot of Failure to Launch is utterly implausible, yet the movie is thoroughly fun. Tripp (laid-back Matthew McConaughey, Sahara, Dazed and Confused) is a 35-year-old man who still lives with his parents (Kathy Bates, Misery, and ex-quarterback Terry Bradshaw)--and they aren't happy about it. Eager to get him out of the nest, they hire Paula (Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker), a professional motivator who feigns relationships with boy-men so that their improved self-esteem will lead them to leave the nest. But Tripp's not the usual insecure shut-in Paula's used to, and as sparks fly, Paula finds herself losing her professional distance. This sort of set-up drove classic screwball comedies of the 1930s and 40s; once you embrace the absurdity, the movie zips along with a surprising balance of humour and bittersweet shadings. Failure to Launch gets a huge boost from the supporting performance of Zooey Deschanel (Elf) as Paula's housemate Kit--part sourpuss, part tomboy, and entirely sexy and winning. McConaughey and Parker have enjoyable chemistry and carry the movie well, but Deschanel is an oddball romantic-heroine-in-waiting. Also featuring Bradley Cooper (Alias) and Justin Bartha (National Treasure). --Bret Fetzer

This movie failed to launch May 16, 2008 Atrocious. If you have an IQ in positive territory you don't need to watch this.
Ahoy there me hearties March 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I actually quite enjoyed this film but then I was in emotional turmoil at the time I bought it - having recently been dumped it was a case of "quick, quick find a girlie film to watch before you melt down and start sobbing in the aisles" (i was in Asda at the time) so confess I just picked up this film in a blind panic.
I've never really bonded with SJP but found she wasn't too bad in this film and Matthew wotshisname is so laid back that I relaxed right in - his chest is quite nice to look at and proved a valuable distraction in my time of need.
It is funny in parts - silly funny though. Don't expect too much of the film and you may be suprised to find you enjoy it. It's a fluffy, lighthearted rom com and did the trick.
Perhaps it was a failure to lanch? February 29, 2008 This film has its moments, but both of the main characters came across as rather annoying. Their friends however, are all quite amusing! Especially that nerd that went out with whats-her-name's flat mate, she was quite funny too. But on the whole, I just can' make my mind up about this movie...
But then, perhaps modern films just fail to launch me in general?
Give it a go, make up your own mind about it, I'm ceratin some people love love this film.
A disappointment November 22, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I saw the trailer of this movie in the cinemas, I couldn't wait to see the movie, but when it came out and I saw it, I was disappointed.
Matthew McConaughey is irresistible, as always, you are either swooning or sighing when he's on screen, but SJP urgh.. I think she did a horrible job here. First of all, she looked way too old for the part, and she overplayed Paula, making her affecting and screaming that it was just a role. It irritated me! Even though Matthew tried her best and SJP clearly wasn't immune to his charms, I felt that there was no chemistry between the characters, making the whole romance unbelievable and forced.
But the supporting cst was brilliant! I LOVED Zooey Deschanel, she is simply adorable and so funny! she gives a specatcular and hilarious performance! And of course the two actors playing Matthew McConaughey's friends are great too!! oh, and let's not forget about the actor who plays Matthew McConaughey's dad with his obsession about having a Naked Room, where he can walk around naked! :-D the 2 stars are for them!)
It's a movie you watch once and then promise yourself you won't waste another 2 hours of your life rewatching it.
very enjoyable November 21, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
definitely worth a look if you like rom coms.... this was ideal midweek viewing too as it wasn't too long so didn't keep me up too late!
Good pace and some very amusing moments.. often from the secondary characters as much as from the main ones.
