5 out of 5 stars Beat me on the bottom with the Woman's Weekly!   May 7, 2007

Victoria Wood's finest not-quite-an-hour is a tour de force of standup. She gives short shrift to the "An Audience With..." tradition of scripted banter with invited celebs ("That's my friend Julie Walters, star of Educating Rita and Typhoo One-Cup") and gets on with what she does best: perfectly observed comedy. Includes the wonderful Ballad of Freda and Barry. The author of the lines...

Don't starve a
Girl of her palaver
Dangle from the wardrobe in your balaclava

... has earned a place in the literary Valhalla.

5 out of 5 stars An all-time classic with bonus features!   July 20, 2006

I already own the Cinema Club edition of 'An Audience with Victoria Wood' but because I am slightly obsessed, I had to order this new Network edition. Strangely enough, I didn't know at the time what made this a 'special edition' but I am very pleased with this DVD.

Not only does it contain the magnificent fifty minute solo show from the reigning queen of British comedy which won her two Bafta awards in 1989, but it also contains excerpts from four different interviews from the 1980s (and 1990). These are the kinds of thing I have scattered around on poor quality VHS, but now I have better quality versions to keep for ever.

These interviews are as follows:

Michael Aspel interviewing her on Aspel & Co from 23rd Feb 1985,
Clive James interviewing her on his show from 22 June 1985,
Gloria Hunniford interviewing her on 'Sunday Sunday' originally aired on 23rd Sept 1990,
and an excerpt from 'The Glass Box' in which Victoria discusses visual memories she'd like to preserve for prosperity.

Compared to other DVDs showcasing the talent of Victoria Wood's genius, this one stands out for having decent bonus features. (The only other decent release in this respect is 'Acorn Antiques: The Musical!')

I still pray for the day when the BBC get their act together and release the complete 13 episodes of 'Victoria Wood As Seen on TV' along with bonus features such as 'All Day Breakfast' and the two 'revisits' to 'Acorn Antiques' as featured in the TV60 programme and 'Victoria Wood's Sketch Show Story'.

Only time will tell.

As for the classic episode of the popular 'An Audience with...' series, this gem includes her wonderful monologues which gently mock the British, opinion poll surveyors, make up demonstrators and, of course, there are her brilliantly comic songs including the famous 'Ballad of Barry and Frieda' otherwise known as 'Let's Do It!'

This is fifty minutes of pure entertainment.
