5 out of 5 stars It gets under one's skin   June 29, 2008

The Line of Beauty is a 2004 Booker Prize-winning novel by Alan Hollinghurst. The book explores the tension between Nick's intimate relationship with the Feddens, in whose parties and holidays he participates, and the realities of his sexuality and gay life, which the Feddens accept only to the extent of never mentioning it. It explores themes of hypocrisy, homosexuality, madness and wealth, with the emerging AIDS crisis forming a backdrop to the book's conclusion. It is a breathtaking portrayal of life among the privileged governing Tory classes during the early to middle 1980s.

The novel was adapted for television by Andrew Davies as a three-part mini-series for BBC Two, broadcast in 2006. This sophisticated social analysis is captured to perfection in the mini-series. It is no funny, typical gay story. Sex and drugs mix, love ends by social pressure and ignorance and all begins to be overshadowed by HIV. It is sad to watch.
Nothing what seems perfect in the beginning stays perfect, rather the reverse. It gets under your skin.

The title " The Line of Beauty" has many meanings ranging from Nick's company name Ogee taken from the sinuous double curve cited by Hogarth as the "line of beauty", to a line of cocaine to a man's lower back cleaves to his bottom.

5 out of 5 stars A Dance with the Prime Minister   January 19, 2008

Fans of Alan Hollinghurst should be really pleased with this TV adaptation of his last and award-winning novel. The TV format may be difficult for some used to cinema-size productions (e.g. difficult to take at one go) but seems perfectly suited for this particular novel. The Line of Beauty develops slowly, gradually and it requires time to play itself out completely. A 90 minutes long movie would have to squeeze and cut down the plot and there is a serious danger little would be left of its original charms.
If you know and like AH novels and The Line of Beauty in particular you will not be disappointed. If you stumbled upon this DVD by chance, it may be a good introduction to some decent reading.

1 out of 5 stars 180 minutes of my life - gone !!   September 3, 2007

This production seems to have some very mixed reviews. With a mini-series like this, I have to watch the end once I have started. The Line Of Beauty is solely responsible for me reviewing this policy. Why anybody would want to film a group of people who have nothing to offer but dull, sanctimonious dialogue, is beyond me. As far as I can see, the whole gay scene was thown in so that somebody would say "wow - how controversial", infact they didn't. They probably thought, the same as me - "surely there will be a good twist at the end of this" - there wasn't!
The acting was okay, but they really had very little to act with. The big finale was a family finally realising that their lodger was a complete blagger and ought to stop interfering in their business - we didn't see that coming. The only amazing thing about this production is that amongst such an array of characters, I didn't find myself warming to a single one. To be frank, I would like to have seen anyone of them choking on their own smug smiles that seemed comulsory after each line delivery. One to avoid !

1 out of 5 stars Don't do it!   August 28, 2007

This is complete poofery, which rambles along till page 60 and beyond.
If you've got 1,000 yen to spare, there are at least seven other more fruitful ways to use it than to spend time on this drivel.

2 out of 5 stars Deeply disappointing   June 12, 2007

One of my favourite books of recent years has ben turned into a lightweight shallow TV production. One of the beauties of reading Hollinghurst is the sophistication of his prose and the mature approach to developing exceptionally interesting characters. All his books are carefully observed and rate amongst the best pieces of modern British fiction.
So by necessity it would be tricky to turn Line of Beauty into a three part TV drama, but it needn't have been this poor.
Please read the book and forget about this production.
