5 out of 5 stars Why Not Five Stars ?   September 8, 2008
So, it's a thriller - is that any reason why it can't be worthy of five stars?

Someone has said that it is "the best cop thriller since Heat" but it is better than that.

Sure it hasn't the budget of a Hollywood production but that brings its own advantages - there are no outlandish special effects to diminish it's credibility. The cops here are realand those who play the authorities are believable (the criminals are merely the backdrop for the story).

Unlike American films we arn't told at the outset who the good guys are and at first we arn't even sure who're the cops - be they good or bad. Yes there're some cliches but they're outnumbered by so much of that which is original.

Do you remember the initial response to The French Connection? How we were blown away by its pace and the fallibility of the cops? Here too the main characters are cleverly drawn. There is a moral ambiguity in whatever they do and the script exposes the hypocricy of demanding success at any price but then insisting that the victor pays it.

As I watched this at home, I kept exclaiming to my wife " This is a good movie " or "this is a great movie" and it just never let up.

Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent and realistic   August 17, 2008
I won't repeat what has already been written, but would like correct one point made by another reviewer. The more sympathetic Police officer, Vrinks, played by Daniel Auteil, is not ambitious. In fact, he states he does not want the top job, that the other detective, Klein, Gerard Depardieu, does want. He simply wants to bring down the bad guys, because they have just ... well, given him a very good reason.

This has gone to the top of my list of favorite French films, and is quite high at the top of cop films as well. I don't get the comparison with "Heat' though. This should be judged on it's own merits. It certainly is more American than French, but in a good way.

5 out of 5 stars Heavyweight French Cast- Superb   April 19, 2008

Heavyweight French Cast (especially Gerard Depardieu) come together for this crime caper. Daniel Auteil is the French detective who must urgently crack a case of big time bank robbers who use maximum force in their crimes. When he is framed as an accessory in a murder he must walk a tightrope under the gaze of his jealous love and work rival.

5 out of 5 stars A superb film...   December 29, 2007

Billed as the French "Heat" it's a film about two ambitious cops. One who desires power, the other results and both do whatever it takes to get results. The film charts their pursuit of a gang of armed robbers and the choices they make along the way as well as the consequences. It's a brilliant, engaging, supberbly acted film that doesn't shy away from showing the moral ambiguitities facing police officers. Without doubt, I'd rate this as one of the best cop/crime movies ever.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST COP FILM SINCE SERPICO   November 19, 2007

OBVIOUSLY I WANT YOU TO WATCH THIS FILM, SO I WON'T GIVE THE PLOT AWAY!

DANIEL AUTEUIL IS BRILLIANT AS A RENEGADE BUT RIGHTEOUS COP WHO IS LOCKED IN A POWER STRUGGLE WITH AN AMORAL COP PLAYED BY GERARD DEPARDIEU. AUTEUIL IS, AS ALWAYS WONDERFUL AND IT IS A TRIBUTE TO DEPARDIEU'S ACTING SKILLS, BEARING IN MIND HOW MUCH MOST PEOPLE LOVE HIM, THAT WE ARE DESPERATE FOR HIM TO GET HIS COME-UPPANCE.

QUITE FRANKLY, THIS LEAVES MOST HOLLYWOOD COP FILMS SUCKING THE EXHAUST PIPE AND IT IS A TRIBUTE AND FINE EXAMPLE OF JUST HOW GREAT EUROPEAN CINEMA CAN BE. NO DOUBT HOLLYWOOD WILL REMAKE THIS FILM; PROBABLY WITH TOM CRUISE IN THE AUTEUIL ROLE AND WILLEM DAFOE IN DEPARDIEU'S AND I BET IT WILL PALE SIGNIFICANTLY IN COMPARISON, TO THE ORIGINAL!

HOLLYWOOD HAS A FEW GREAT ACTORS; AL PACINO, NICOLE KIDMAN, GENE HACKMAN, SEAN PENN AND THE WONDERFUL EDWARD NORTON ACCOUNT FOR THE BULK. THERE ARE MANY MORE 'STARS' IN HOLLYWOOD, BUT MOST OF THEM COULDN'T ACT THEIR WAY OUT OF A PAPER BAG. WATCH THIS FILM FOR SOME GREAT PERFORMANCES; MYLENE DEMONGEOT AS MANOU IS LIVING PROOF THAT A WOMAN OVER 50 CAN BE THE HORNIEST THING ON EARTH, WITHOUT THE AID OF COSMETIC SURGERY. EAT YOUR HEART OUT YOU UNBELIEVABLY VERY DESPERATE HOUSWIVES.

VIVE LA CINEMA D'EUROPE
