5 out of 5 stars A Dark Shallow Grave (Only Darker)   September 8, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

This is a really good film. It is a silly dark comedy. Its like a darker but also sillier version of Shallow Grave. If you like your comedy black this is for you. Its not friends or Run Fat Boy Run which would explain all the one and two star reviews. Not Peg or Schwimmer,s usual stuff. This has a much darker tone than Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuss. Although that stuff is violent it has a positive out look on friendship and is also fun. This has very little laugh out load stuff, and is more like grim ironic chortling stuff. Very good but only watch if you like this sort of thing. br /br /My wife hated it.

2 out of 5 stars Big Nothing Indeed.   July 26, 2008

I have to admit to having watched this under duress- it really wouldn't be the kind of film that I would normally pick up for myself, but I was over-ruled by the men in my household! So I sat down, and I promised to try. Nothing much happened for the first ten minutes or so, but then that can be the case with the very best films, so I sat there in eager anticipation of some semblance of a story to develop. br /br /It just never materialises, I'm afraid. I'm not a fan of violence for its own sake, but I assure you that this wasn't the problem here. The violence wasn't excessive, neither was the acting, nor the direction, nor the writing. That was just it- it has an overwhelming whiff of 'blah' about it. It is a fairly featureless landscape as a film.br /br /I did run this by the chaps, because this sort of film is more their cup of tea (ordinarily) than it is mine. They also agreed that it is watchable but nothing special. What we would call a 'non-starter', and certainly a 'try before you buy'. Approach with caution, as I suspect that you will have seen superior films.

1 out of 5 stars This REALLY is a BIG Nothing!!!   July 8, 2008
What happened???!!!br /Simon Pegg (as an american, accent, warts and all!!!) and David Schwimmer are really nothing to write home about! This film aspires to be a black comedy- a sinister view of... forget it- there really are NO hidden agendas, plots or funny gags in this pointless film. Simon Pegg- WHAT are you thinking??!!Taking on everything on offer...With a back-catalouge like Spaced, The Asylum, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and much more-HOW can you do this??!!!br /I REALLY want to warn anyone considering buying this- Don't!!!Get a roll of toilet paper and have more fun watching that instead!

2 out of 5 stars Nothing to it   June 23, 2008

you may have never heard of this film - if so, there's a good reason for that - its not very good.br /br /Simon Pegg (putting on the worst and most variable US accent in movie history) and David Shhhhhhhwimmer star in this caper comedy which centres around an unbelievable caper and isnt very funny. Which to be honest, doesnt leave it much left to play with. br /br /The ending doesnt make sense and the script is predictable - Jean-Baptiste Andrea who wrote and directed has gone on to write Hellphone, a film about a boy addicted to his phone... great.

2 out of 5 stars SO much potential..   June 20, 2008

As you can see from my rating I didn't particularly like this film, it felt like the first draft of the script had been produced in the hope the audience might forget the glaringly obvious plot holes present in nearly every scene . There are glimmers of brilliance, notably from Simon Pegg, but these are quickly diminshed by the nonsensical script. For a comedy like this to work it must be believable, whereas this simply goes from one implausible scene to the next. br /br /Rent, Do NOT buy.br /br /
