Great first half, rubbish second half, good bluray quality October 27, 2008 The first half of the film, basically building up the background, introducing the lead characters and doing the "farm boy learns how to be a hero" thing starts off promisingly. I was not expecting much so was pleasantly surprised. A decent story, yes very cliched, but what fantasy film isn't to some greater or lesser extent a copy of its predecessors?br /br /Amicable lead actor for Eragon, and Jeremy Irons brings a touch of much needed class to the film. To be honest, Mr Irons saves the film from 1 or 2 stars from me.br /br /However, the second half is utter tripe. br /br /Glaring CGI failures (e.g we are shown the dragon armour that was made for the dragon, in the next scene we see the dragon wearing completely different armour). br /br /Rubbish choreography of the battles, quite often you can see the extras wondering around cluelessly, in one scene a general called for "archers!" and 2 blokes with crossbows appeared. 2 archers out of the whole army? br /br /Ridiculous costumes, some guards were wearing what can only be described as veils made of thin gold chainmail, it looked hilarious and completely useless.br /br /So watch it and be disappointed by the last 40 minutes.br /br /I rented it and am reasonably glad I did, but if I had bought it I would be very annoyed with myself.
Formula coming of age hero series pilot August 25, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
We see the prehistory of the present day and cut to Eragon (Ed Speleers) before he realizes his destiny, hunting; he come across the standard virgin (Sienna Guillory) and a unique stone. Eragon meets the standard characters as his soon to be mentor Brom (a dirty faced Jeremy Irons). Soon circumstance will force this farmer's nephew, Eragon to have to blossom into the prototype hero. He is joined by a dragon, Saphira (voice of Rachel Weisz) that imprints on coming out.br /Will he rise above his fears and save the princes?br /br /I can not help but fee that the characters are just walking thorough their parts. On course if you are young and impressionable and have not seen this standard story before it may not be noticed. I used to watch "The Cisco Kid" and was impressed as a child.br /br /Naturally there is nothing one can say to the reader of books except that many times, as with this example, the transition to the big screen will lose a lot of the story. However the screen writer did not have to tell his own story, even if it is needed to keep up the momentum. The movie does look like a pilot so maybe more will come in a sequel or a TV show.br /br /See the story much better done as "Star Wars" (1977) the farmer's nephew must become a hero after his uncle was burnt to a crisp. Only the mentor is Obi-wan and Saphira, our dragon is two robots and a Chewbacca.br /br /This film can be fun but there is nothing exceptional. Reading Joseph Campbell ahead of time can add a richer dimension to the story.br /br /br /
Fantasy escapism at its best April 18, 2007 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
I didn't have any preconceptions about this movie and watched it late at night when I was very tired. Wow, did it wake me up. A beautiful piece of film-making from beginning to end. Great characters, a dash of humour a sprinkle of mystery and of course... the dragon. If you want to escape into an enthralling fantasy world for a couple of hours, this movie is a good choice. All that remains for me to say is when can I watch the sequel? :)
THE BEST EVER!! April 13, 2007 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
The evil King Galbatorix rules over a land from which dragons have all but disappeared, until humble farm boy Eragon happens upon a mysterious blue object that turns out to be a dragon egg. Eragon befriends the charming dragon cub Saphira and becomes her rider, designating him as the principal warrior in the fight against evil. br /br /Edward Speleersbr /was fabbr /and everyone else was goodbr /too!!br /br /A real treat!!!br /Best movie yet and the effectsbr /are shockingly good!!!
Fab movie April 8, 2007 1 out of 10 found this review helpful
You may see this review frombr /another person this is becausebr /me and that person are brothers!br /br /I have to say i thought this movie would suck! br /Boy was i wrong. It was magnifenecnt. Effects are at top br /noch and the acting is ace. Sound is great and scenes and backgrounds are fab. If you close in some films backgrounds suck, but br /this has a fantastic one. All the way through was unpridectable br /and had a great yet slow ending. br /I've got to say this film proved me br /wrong for sure. Especially Edwars Speleers. br /This film is not a b movie and was not made for money, br /But for entertainment and fun! br /Buy it, you wont be let down!
