1 out of 5 stars Gladiator rip off   August 15, 2008

I'm not too hot on Welsh history, but if this is what it was like back in the day I'm glad for change. Mishy mashy history lessons presented as entertainment like this seem a bit pointless. History from books is sterile, so this film is supposed to be an exciting alternative. All history is a big fib so its difficult to tell what the truth of the subject matter really is. The film is overlong, by about 2 hours and the blue american football make-up on Melvyn Gibson looks silly. The Welsh didn't wear skirts, even for fighting in and the battle scenes are a bit amateur, like a fake battlers weekend caught on a cheap vidicam. Gladiator did battles far better, although that's a trashy, self indulgent waste of time too.

5 out of 5 stars True Love never dies,   June 12, 2008

This film is in my top 5 of Greatest Films Ever. After reading other reviews from other epic films, I have to agree here. If you wish to watch an historic account without any inaccuracies, then I suggest you view the History Channel, or, visit your local library. Epic films are MERELY ` loosely based ' on parts of history.br /br /As with my other reviews, I do not write synopis' as all readers should be aware of the story. Here, we have Mel Gibson at his finest form in acting, and his debut in directorship.br /br /From the very start to the very end, not once, or at any time of viewing this film, since 1995, have I ever looked at the clock. The music score and scenery is just magnificent and beautiful.br /br /You have the young child William Wallace, then the mature Wallace, thrown into political decision making, when found love. Revenge for family and his beloved wife. If all couples in this world would treat their supposedly beloved as he did, then love and peace would surround this planet.br /br /The acting from ALL actors/ess' are superb and strong. And as for Patrick Magoon as the cold and sinister Edward 1 (long shanks) makes Wicked Witch of the West look like Aunty Pat of Butlins !!br /br /And as for the battle scenes. ?...... well, if you have not viewed this film, then I suggest you order NOW !!br /br /Oh, and for those who think Braveheard is just another Hollywood over the top hype of a film. The Battle of Sterling was ONE of the worst battles in Scotish History, and although I am English, my deep respect goes to the scots.br /br /Finnally for those who always have to critcise about inaccuracies, Edward 11 was gay and he was imprisoned in Berkeley Castle and had a red hot poker inserted up his rectum as his execution.br /br /For those who were somewhat a little too young at the time of it's release and have not yet viewed. It is a must. !!br /br /

5 out of 5 stars A Scottish Hero   October 10, 2007

I have to give this film 5 stars. Without doubt this film has everything that you would wish for in a perfect nights entertainment. There is action and romance. There is love and revenge. There is war and political intrigue. A great historical action romp as good as Gladiator.br /br /The story is of the 13th Century famous Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace who historically was a giant of a man, although here he is played by Mel Gibson, who gives a great performance with a top supporting cast.br /br /The film draws you in to the character William Wallace and you immediately feel for the plight of the Scottish, and the passion that drives William Wallace on.

5 out of 5 stars Braveheart   July 15, 2007

This really is an excellent film. Possibly the first great historical epic in a long time, it paved the way for the likes of Gladiator and 300 - basically making the historical epic cool again!br /br /The story is of William Wallace and how he led his country in a fight for freedom. The story covers the themes of love, lust, betrayal, loyalty, and so many more. Mel Gibson (both as director and actor) masterfully weaves all the elements together to make for a truly moving experience. You feel hate for the tyrannical king, sympathy for the country that's ravaged (by both sides), and you often feel right behind William Wallace, stirred at his motivational speeches, joyful at his victories, and moved deeply by his losses.br /br /The music deserves a special mention, with James Horner providing some of his best themes ever, even when compared against his work on Titanic. Also, the cast do a wonderful job, and I couldn't imagine any of the main characters being portrayed by anyone else.br /br /This really is an excellent film indeed and one I can't recommend highly enough.br /br /This particular edition is one of Fox's Definitive Editions, coming in a very attractive steelback case. It also includes a fascinating and sometimes amusing commentary from Mel Gibson, a 30 minute documentary with thoughts from various members of the cast and crew on the task Mel Gibson undertook, and the film's theatrical trailer (set to music from The Mission, which works surprisingly well).br /br /Overall, a great package of a great film. This review isn't as thorough as perhaps it could be, but I do hope it expresses how strongly and positively I feel about this film.
