Travel Programming at it's most Realistic December 9, 2008 Great British Journeys is a splendid series about eight historical journeys faithfully recreated by the irrepressible Nicholas Crane.br /br /Chronologically, they range from Gerald of Wales's 1188 mission to recruit Welshmen for the crusades up to H. V. Morton's 20th century excursions in Scotland in a motor car. These were pioneering travellers as they were each seeing that part of their own country for the first time. Each episode appears suitably well researched and presumably historically accurate. That said, I couldn't help suspect that retracing these historical itineries was perhaps just an excuse just to make 8 travel programmes across Britain. I certainly felt that at the end of each episode I hadn't become much more acquainted with any of the intrepid travellers like William Defoe and William Gilpin. Strangely enough, this doesn't detract from it's value as a travel series.br /br /Great British Journeys is itself quite pioneering in its approach to outdoor programme making. For starters, much of it appears to be filmed out of season in the autumn and winter. So its not all the picture postcard stuff to which we are normally accostomed. The landscape is frequently bleak and poor Nicholas Crane is regularly seen trudging along in driving rain. He is also spotted slipping and sliding, his trouser ends filthy and trying to haul his bike out of deep mud - the sort of footage normally left on the editor's floor for the cleaner to sweep up. Filming also takes place in nondescript areas of towns and cities. I found this style of documentary engaging and I think real travellers will appreciate that it shows the British outdoors in a more realistic light. The other main attraction is the presenter. One of the stars of the superb Coast series, Nicholas Crane's compelling enthusiasm shines through on camera even during the most inclement of weather. He is a professional writer and traveller whose genuine interest in the outdoor environment is obvious on screen and which lends intergrity to the whole project. Perhaps, the only drawback is that whilst the overall quality of production is very high it is a less expensive shoot than some other series like the aforementioned Coast with it's expansive aerial photography.br /br /One of the extras accompanying the DVD is an interview with Crane. In it he states that the chief reason for making such a series is to encourage Britons to discover and appreciate their natural environment. I think it might have done so.
Quality Telly November 15, 2008 This a great DVD for those wanting to see diverse parts of the Great British countryside.br /br /Nick Crane does an admirable job of retracing documented jouneys made during, generally, the pre-industrial age and he always finds time to sup some ale in a wayside inn.br /br /The William Cobbett programme is my favourite. He often refers to documents and in this case W.C.'s 'Rural Rides'. He starts the programme waving one Penguin Classic edition, then he clutches and older edition and then says goodbye brandishing his original copy. Also during the piece with the quad-biking shepherd the last 4 or 5 seconds end with them bothwalking backwards uphill followed by an arse-first sheepdog.br /br /Good stuff indeed.

This is a must for all who are interested in knowing more about the bold travellers who mapped the country, from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to the Cape Cornwall from the Pinnines to the mountains of Wales.Geographer Nicholas Crane brings vibrant enthusiasm to each of the journeys he makes around the UK. An excellent series, informative and compulsive viewing.
Happy walks September 30, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I like Nicholas Crane a lot and this series is a great idea. I did find the camera work very irritating though and a great distraction. Lots of blurry stuff, quick changes of pace ,or concentrations on bicycle spokes and feet when you'd far rather see the scenary. I have to say this spoilt it for me and I wouldn't have bought it had I rented it first.
Imagining a Past November 10, 2007 13 out of 23 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this series although, to be completely honest, it was constantly irritating. Its great virtue was to open up the subject of tourism as it develped in the 18th century and what at that time people wished to know - to discover - about the scenery, occupation and the quality of the lives lived in their time. One difficulty was the intrusiveness of the narration. Nick Crane's enthusiasm was engaging but there was no escape: the lasting image one has is the endless riding of a bicycle across road and down and his interpretations - sometimes irritating and occasionally absurd. For me, to the extent that I had information about the original explorers, the programmes were spoilt by factual inaccuracies. Defoe, the Delboy of his age! Come on now, don't be so silly.br /br /
