Bung it in yer trolley April 19, 2008 This is a film that works on many levels. Psychologists and philosopher's could talk about those while others might just like the sturdy plot and witty script. It rates as one of the best films I've seen. It is an oddity surely that I have got to this age and can never remember having seen it referred to anywhere in a film poll or otherwise. How can this be? It's brilliant and it's sad. Which character in the film are you?
Excellent film March 13, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great British film but it isnt available on DVD release in Britain , only America ! br /
Stunning performance January 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Alfred Lynch is the greatest reason of all for watching this film. It is a superb film, pulls no punches, and is very effectively shot in unflinching black and white. Somehow the relentlessness of the sun and heat are better expressed this way than in colour. However, and to reinforce a point, Alfred Lynch is mesmerising as the gentle, painfully naive, and desperate Stevens, who, it is acknowledged, ought not to be in the army at all. Do not pass up a chance to see for yourself.
Why is there still no uk reg 2 DVD? December 16, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Probably one of the best war-dramas ever made and easily one of Sean Connery`s finest ever performances.Never on mainstream uk tv and no sign of a dvd either.I`m really glad that many more people do seem to be aware of this film now, largely thanks to TCM and the recent r1 dvd.Why is this treated with such disdain in the uk?Does the subject matter make certain people uneasy?
At last it's available... November 15, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
At last, one of the finest cinema dramas has found its way on DVD, and Bluray or HD-DVD will soon follow I guess. But with this movie you should not toy, because it is an extraordinary piece of art.br /Director Sidney Lumet choose to shoot the film in black-and-white. Filled with a stellar cast of fine actors who give persuasive and honest performances, leading by Sean Connery who shows he could done more while on top of his shooting star career after playing three very successful James Bond films.br /br /The Hill is one of his kind, it is highly entertaining, while the dialogue is sharp and witty, unfortunately sometimes it is a little difficult to understand as the protagonist shout at each other, but with the subtitles you will be ok.br /br /The story is simple but effective as 5 inmates being charged with different allegations serving their punishment in an british military camp placed in the African desert.br /br /Likeable leading casts are Ian Bannen as Staff Harris who is well aware of the blindness of his superior RSM Staff Bert Wilson. Very sadistic in every way of the word is Staff Sergeant Williams who looked hard to the transfer just to punish the prisoners on his own satisfaction.br /br /The story gets dead serious when one of the inmates are pushed a little bit too far (wearing a gas mask and climbing up a hill, right in middle of the afternoon sun in the African desert). The death of him results in a riot which soon reveals the true intentions of Staff Williams...br /br /***br /The cast, the cinematography, the editing, the storyline, the plot, the dialogue (novel by Ray Rigby) the whole concept of filming, makes this a true delight of highly entertaining drama, which is only hard to copy.br /br /Till it's day it ranks among the best of best's. The poor thing only is, that only very little people know this film, which is also very odd.br /br /All thumbs up!!br /br /jwbr /
