In an ocean of police shows competing for screen space, INew Tricks/I has one heck of a trump card. For while its plotlines aren?t particularly radical, and while the pace is perhaps gentler than you may expect, its cast greedily devour the material and lift a good show into something really quite special.PThe premise behind INew Tricks/I is that three retired detectives are called in to work as a mismatched team of sorts to solve crimes. So far, so routine. But those three detectives are played by Dennis Waterman, James Bolam and Alun Armstrong, a trio who can not only act, but are also capable of maximising the comedy potential on offer. Then, there?s the juicy inclusion of Amanda Redman, who brought the three of them back together in the first place. Combined, these four are clearly having a terrific time with the show, and it?s fun we?re all invited to share in.PThe third season of INew Tricks/I, presented in this DVD set, features eight varied episodes and the obligatory end-of-season cliffhanger, along with some welcome guest stars. The stories cover ice cream, witchcraft, dogs and school, and it?s to the show?s credit that it does balance the serious moments with its plentiful humour exceptionally well.PIn short, INew Tricks/I is a real treat, putting core values ahead of gimmicks and letting us all enjoy the rewards of its approach.  Wonderful but... October 5, 2008
I have all the New Tricks volumes and this keeps up the standard of the others. The acting is wonderful and the stories a mixture of light comedy and serious plot. So why oh why did the producers need to put in the backgound music - the single key piano playing, and synthesised violin trying to create pathos? It is just not necessary and in fact spoils the viewing when you become aware of it. Apart from that it is brilliant

What an absolutely super show this is, this series has been the one that has removed Starsky and Hutch from being my favourite police show ever.br /br /The strength of this show is not the storylines (although they are brilliant), it is simply the wonderful characterisation of the four major cast members. These parts are obviously loved by the actors that portray them as they give it their all, the chemistry between them all is second to none and more importantly they are actors that can actually ACT, a very rare thing with television today.br /br /The series takes it's time to present each case thoroughly and intelligently, rather than the usual rapid cutting through scenes that is regrettably the norm today, the guest stars of each episode will have seen what a good time the regulars have making it and raise their own performances to match, this is as close to perfection as you can get.br /br /This disc has eight episodes which include such diverse subjects as witchcraft, dog murders, ice cream van wars, robberies and so on, ending in a fantastic cliffhanger that left me panting to see the next episode, 10 months to wait was far too long.br /br /If you like police shows that are wholly original and have the best ensemble cast on TV at the moment, then buy this. If you are not a fan I promise you that after viewing just one episode of this masterpiece you will be, there has never been a finer comedy/drama to grace our TV screens, I really believe that and is the reason for this type of review.br /br /Five stars is just not enough.
