Dream On September 28, 2008 This series was one of the most original, creative and funniest things I have ever seen! I await the rest of the series with impatience! The plot? a man swims upstream against circumstance, friends and lovers using clips from 1950's TV to rationalise and relate to his curent circumstance. Despite his weaknesses and failings you have to love Martin Tupper. John
Absolutely brilliant April 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love this series, it's another of those that I used to catch odd episodes from during late night channel hopping. It's got a great cast with Brian Benben playing the lead role of Martin Tupper and some great supporting performances by Denny Dillon as his over-bearing secretary Toby, Jeffrey Joseph as his best friend Eddie who fronts a seedy reality TV show and Wendie Malick as his ex-wife and a whole host of beautiful co-stars often in nude scenes. The writers and directors never lose sight of the fact it is a comedy show and all these nude scenes are relevant to the plots, honestly. This first season sees Martin finally agreeing to a divorce as his ex wants to marry her new lover a brilliant surgeon who can also turn his hand to just about everything much to Martin's disgust, it takes a long time but eventually Mr.Perfect, who is never seen here, finally fails at something. It's superby written and, most important for a comedy show, it is very funny. The clips they used are well edited in and shows it was made by people with a love for old films and TV series, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, who also had some success with a later comedy show you may have heard about called Friends. Many thanks for finally putting this out on DVD, I now have series 2 on order.
Excellent series! Hopefully they'll bring out the other seasons. February 5, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is an excellent series that has a loyal cult following but deserves much more widespread popularity. It's one of the cleverest, funniest TV shows that I've seen. It chronicles the life of Martin Tupper, a divorced book editor who is still in love with his ex-wife. The plotlines and scripts on their own are outstanding, but the series is given an added unique edge by the ingenious intermingling of old black-and-white footage (representing Martin's internal thoughts, shaped by large amounts of TV that he watched as a child in the 50s) at opportune moments. If you haven't seen this series, it is highly recommended. These DVDs contain the uncensored, original HBO editions. I just hope that this UK release is a sign that the other 5 series are going to be issued in future.
