A lightweight collection for some??? June 27, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is the complete collection of Rocky films, spanning all six films across 30 years. If you already own the Anthology box set there is little incentive to buy this new collection, simply because it differs very little from the previous box set. The most obvious addition is the latest film, Rocky Balboa. This film is a definite finale for the franchise, so rest assured you won't buy this box set only to find out Rocky 7 is on the way. The only other difference is with the original Rocky film, as this collection includes the "Definitive Edition" - a 2 disc set packed full of extras, that can also be bought separately.br /br /Rocky 2 right through to Rocky 5 remain untouched from previous versions, which means they include nothing in the way of extras. This is what has disappointed many fans - a lot of people feel this is a missed opportunity and that extras should have been added. I'm somewhat inclined to agree with them becuase surely there must be some extra material on the cutting room floor that could have been included - promotional material, interviews, commentary, etc? Nope, nothing it seems. Despite this disappointment this is still worth getting for anyone who does not already own all the Rocky films. br /br /It's also worth noting that this collection is a limited edition box set that is indivdually numbered. I'm proud to say I came across number 00051. How limited it actually proves to be is anyone's guess - I suppose technically it could go up to 99,999. Almost 100 thousand people owning a copy suddenly doesn't make it feel quite so limited.
Where are the extras? June 27, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There is no doubting the universal appeal of these films which have accrued a large and loyal fan base - myself included. However, I just feel that this box set is yet another missed opportunity to provide fans with an "ultimate" box set.br /br /As regards extras, I would like to see all the TV spots, promotional interviews, all the trailers for all the films, makings of, profiles, locations, and Rocky's Philadelphia. What about a full length retrospective documentary where many of the actors who took part in the films relate their own anecdotal insights? What about the Survivor music videos for Rocky III and Rocky IV? Each film should get the two disc special edition treatment that was lavished on Rocky I, then this would be worth buying. br /br /I just feel that this box set is just another repackaging of the movies, but falls short as regards giving the fans of this franchise the collection they really deserve... Great films... Poor package!br /
The Heavyweight Champion of the World May 30, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Rocky.....The ultimate tale of the underdog all together in one collection films, extras the lot.br /If you have the previous box set (anthology) they you needent spend 50 on this instad just by the new film and finish the set. but for those who maybe only have the new film or jus 1 or two others get the collection.br /There is no doubt the first film os the very best but Rocky 2 is a perfect follow up and there ae great bits in each oion of the other films. The rocky series is a collection of superb films that show the complete story of the underdog.
Not Again May 28, 2007 4 out of 11 found this review helpful
This box set is only for those who have none of the rocky dvd's and who also didn't get the newest rocky flick "Rocky Balboa".br / True, this is the complete rocky movie set BUT for those who have the previous rocky anthology box set is useless because the only thing which exists here and not in the other set is the new rocky flick "rocky balboa" but more important THERE ARE NO SPECIAL FEATURES FOR ALL THE ROCKY SEQUELS. Only Rocky 1 is presented here in two disc special edition.br / Until stallone desides to bring the rocky sequels in two discs special editions I WILL NOT BUY THIS SET OR ANY OTHER SET. I Have the movies anyways.
A worthwhile purchase for the Rocky fan or DVD collector May 22, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
The original Rocky is a brilliant work of cinema: a tightly-scripted and electrifyingly exciting story of one boxer's sudden shot at "the big time". This package contains the original film, the four sequels Rocky II, III, IV and V, in which Rocky establishes himself as a popular and world class boxer, and finally it contains the recent Rocky VI, Rocky Balboa, in which the original story comes back but this time it's Rocky who is the champ being challenged by a young gun wanting a shot at the big time.br /br /I think the original film is the best and that the most one can say about the others is that a couple provide decent entertainment value (it's well worth watching Mr. T and Dolph Lundgren take on Stallone in Rocky III and IV respectively) and Rocky Balboa is a polished film that will make you grin a big happy smile but not take anything more profound from the experience. Based on that, I can't recommend this box set purely from a quality-of-movie point of view. However, for anyone interested in seeing all the Rocky films and having them collected in one package for the glorification of their DVD collection, this is a box set worth picking up. If you're just interested in seeing what all the Rocky fuss is about then I'd recommend starting with the original and working your way up, deciding only after seeing a few of the films whether you really need them all in a box set.
