compared to the recent BBC series.br /No Merlin,and Arthur the same age,Guinevere as a black servant girl,or Nimue as an evil witch!br /This 1998 version,recently shown on Channel 5,reeks of class,an intelligent script,first class acting from all the cast,and,given their age,pretty impressive special effects.br /For me,Miranda Richardson,as Queen Mab,is alone worth the price of entrance.br /This is a superb production which will bear repeated viewings.br /

Having only just watched this film for the first time last night I was intrigued to see what others had written about it because for me it was a real mixed bag. To my shame I didn't really know the story of Merlin and King Arthur etc so was interested to watch from a factual point of view and my toddler did get up in the middle of it all and wandered about making lots of noise so it was difficult to follow everything (must watch again) but the story was really really good, very gripping and some of the acting was excellent particulary from Jason Done (who again to my shame I have never heard of) who played Mordred, King Arthur's illegitimate child and he brought a real edge and genuine comedy to the film. I personally wasn't keen on Miranda Richardson (who I normally really like) which was a shame as she is in it all the way through, but that aside and some dodgy special effects (but it is 10 years old) it was a really good gripping story. Worth a watch on a winters evening, but start early as it is a long old film...
Settle into the Magic! August 1, 2008
What can I do but agree with the previous reviewers? This is one of the best buys I've ever made! br /br /Such an atmospheric, real-feeling experience. Each role filled to perfection by it's actor. Great special effects even given that it's some years old, now. Full of drama, magic, humour, pathos - a fantastic way to spend an afternoon or evening immersed in the story. And at a reasonable price, too. br /br /NB: - Don't bother with the sequel "Merlins Apprentice" unless there are young kids to entertain. It's a bit of fun - but that's all.

This film has a great story line and the kids love it... if your gonna buy this dvd then do cause its amazin i remember watching it as a kid... Fantastic!!!!!

This is an old old story but with a proper storyline and yes it is interesting BUT actually the characters are very good really get into the roles. Mab is great. A television production I have watched this with the family - 5 times - and it stands up well.br /The mysticism is well thought out a good angle on it as well as some of the factual history of that era. Gosh I might even drag out that old tape watch it again.
