Entertaining series, below average DVD presentation. August 20, 2008 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Less a review of the entertaining and liberal adaptation of the epic poem and more of a general 'heads up' to the DVD quality of the 2007 re-release by Boulevard Entertainment and Sparrowhawk Distribution.br /br /Lumbered with a fuzzy sleeve (making the DVD look like a knock-off copy) the disc is utterly bare bones. No chapter selection even, though you can skip ahead to various points in the film. A bit of a nuisance if you don't have the luxury of watching it all the way through and need to find your place again. Also, the picture quality - though crisp - seems quite badly pixelated in places (especially on water - and there's a lot of it in 'The Odyssey!') causing the image to appear as if it is 'halting' repeatedly for a half second or so. No major problem considering the price, but the fact that there are NO SUBTITLES is a bit of a swine also.br /br /I thought it worth bringing this to customers attention because the 2 part series is ridiculously entertaining and older kids (and adults) will love it. As other reviewers have pointed out - if you're looking for a high brow and 'serious' version of the Odyssey, walk on by!br /br /It's well acted by the always great Armand Assante and Eric Roberts is a suitably nasty villain. Other acting honours veer between the distinctly average to OTT. And the sight of Greta Scacchi getting a bit flustered in the sea is somewhere between neat poetic metaphor and the utterly ridiculous. More the latter.br /br /There's a bit of gore in both parts (part 2 has the fair share) but - technical issues aside - it's well worth the purchase. Very enjoyable.
FIRST CLASS MYTHOLOGICAL ADVENTURE! June 5, 2008 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
FULL MARKS TO THIS 1997 ADAPTATION OF THE ODYSSEY WITH ARMAND ASSANTE. A REALLY CLASSY FILM, EPIC IN FEEL WITH GREAT PRODUCTION VALUES AND A GENUINELEY CLASSICAL TEXTURE. THE VISUAL EFFECTS WORK IS VERY GOOD WITH INTERESTING IDEAS AND A GOOD MIX OF ANIMATRONICS/PROSTHETICS AND SELECTIVE CGI FOR THE VARIOUS GODS MONSTERS SUCH AS POSEIDON (GOD OF THE SEA), POLYPHEMUS (THE CYCLOPS), SCYLLA (THE MULTI HEADED SEA MONSTER) AND HER DEADLY COUNTERPART, THE TERRIFYING CHARYBIDIS - NOT JUST A DEADLY WHIRLPOOL HERE BUT AN ENORMOUS MOUTH RINGED WITH TEETH THAT CAN SWALLOW AN ENTIRE SHIP WITHOUT EVEN TOUCHING THE SIDES!! br /ARMAND ASSANTE PLAYS THE HERO, ODYSSEUS WITH STRENGTH DIGNITY AND THE WHOLE FILM IS A WONDERFULLY ENTERTAINING FANTASY - THE BEST OF IT'S KIND SINCE THE 1960'S JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS AND AT LEAST AS GOOD AS 1981'S CLASH OF THE TITANS.br /THE CLIMACTIC BATTLE IS SURPRISINGLY BRUTAL BLOODY BUT THIS IS SUITABLE FOR THE FAMILY DESPITE IT'S SERIOUS, MATURE TONE.br /IF YOU ENJOYED 2004'S TROY AND WANT TO SEE A CONTINUATION OF THE STORY, ALBEIT WITH A FULL ON FANTASY/GODS MONSTERS APPROACH THEN DO GET THIS!br /A WORD OF WARNING, THERE IS A MODERN VERSION OF JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS AVAILABLE - AVOID AT ALL COSTS! IT'S HOPELESS WITH LOUSY FX WORK - IF YOU'VE SEEN IT ALREADY, PLEASE DONT ALLOW IT TO PUT YOU OFF THIS FAR SUPERIOR MOVIE.
