1 out of 5 stars Death Proof- this movie feels like death   May 20, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

DEATH PROOF is an out-and-out dud, a film so profoundly dull, so relentlessly misguided, so criminally self-indulgent you almost feel bad wasting time criticising it. br /br /The wafer-thin plot revolves around a mysterious Stuntman Mike who roams bars car looking for nubile victims to run over in his "Death proof" car. And his favourite prey is beautiful young women in hotpants and bare feet. br /Apparently, Tarantino was inspired by the cheap films shown in low grade (Grindhouse) cinemas in the 1960s and '70s in the USA. br /The only action in Death Proof arrives in a brief slaughter halfway through and in a silly car chase in the last 20 minutes. br /That leaves 90 minutes of exceptional dullness as Mike's victims-to-be sitting around talking garbage. And it appears Tarantino has lost his ear for the kind of nerdy but fun dialogue he made his own in earlier efforts. br /There are no "Royale with cheese" moments here, with the girls sending us to sleep as they drone on about the ex-boyfriends and the merits of cult 1971 road movie Vanishing Point with an incessant, almost incantatory use of the N-word and the MF-word. br /br /br /Besides the poor dialogue, what really destroys this movie is the acting. Tarantino appears himself in a wooden acting role as a barman (another terrible performance) and the long-chinned director foolishly awards a cameo to his friend Eli Roth (HOSTEL) who appears nervous and rambles through his lines like an amateur. The chasm between a professional and amateur actor has never been so evident, and worst of all was the female Australian/Kiwi lead actress Zoe Bell. Her poor acting skills and her masculine features are not pleasing to the eye. br /br /Having watched all of Tarrantino's movies recently I have been questioning the big chin's genius. Jackie Brown is enjoyable but flawed; the hugely entertaining masterpiece 2-parter that was 'Kill Bill' (flimsy story line that was dragged over two films, a brilliant lesson in style over substance!) is still great. But Resevoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction (ground breaking) seem dated and quite boring to me now.

3 out of 5 stars Death Proof? the box office says differnt...   January 21, 2008

i was pretty excited about seeing this film but when i finally saw it the otherday i was disapointed. i thought it would be a fast paced, slick and super stylistic piece of cinema candy. instead i was treated to endless and mindless bable and not nearly enough cool car chases. when they happen they are awsome so i recomend just jumping to them scenes.

5 out of 5 stars A WHITE HOT JUGGERNAUT AT 200 MILES PER HOUR !   November 30, 2007

Ok so this movie was will not apear to every one! Thing is i have never enjoed a classic grindhouse movies my self unlike my friend QT, but this was never going to be a classic for him but a hommage to all the great grindhouse directors like the king of drive in movies Charles B. Griffith. That said I loved this movie as its got to be the coolest one hes done so far. This is not about gun happy gansters or killer biller assins, they can be cool anytime to us. But the people that QT has dreamed up here are oh so cool cos there normal people! br /br /The girls are wat this movie is all about and wat a job they did. I cant belive how well Rose McGowan did in the movie along with Vernessa Ferlito. Kurt Russle would have been my best act in this as his performance was amazing and i cant stess that enough. BUT! Zoe Bell, oh my god!!! wat a performer! Dont no who I mean, she was Uma Thurmans stunt double in kill bill. br /br /I was lucky to see this movie as origenly indended with plant terror under the title Grindhouse in the summer. I was gutted they didnt show the missing reels. Then wen i heard that as the double feature had failed at the box office and they would be seperating them in Britan I was glade i got the chance to see it intact.br /br /Origenly called Thunder Bolt, Death Proof will def not be for every one as you can tell from the mixed reviews on this page. But I loved it and would say if you can just try to get lost in the charaters and enjoy the stunts that are not CGI for once.

4 out of 5 stars LIGHTEN UP AND ENJOY   November 26, 2007

I am not a film critic, nor do I profess to have any authority over what people choose to watch...but...br /Some films are made to challenge, sicken ,shock, offend, or inform. Some are thought provoking and some are just plain entertaining.br /I feel Tarantinos latest twins encompass much of the above, but we all had a feeling that they were going to be "different" , didnt we ? HE is "different" isnt he? And thats what makes the films watchable ! So if you are in doubt about both the films, Get some friends round, open up a few tinnies and have a look- just dont expect to be challenged- these are plain, basic entertainment for adults, and you'll have a few laughs..if not at the sick humour, then the occasionally shocking effects, or indeed the cheesiness of it all.br /All I will say to the put-downers is, lighten up- if all films followed the same vein, dvd and cinema would be a bore, and we would all have to face reality all the time, rather than have those brief respites where we can immerse ourselves in fantasy for ninety minutes or so. THE RASP.br /

2 out of 5 stars Change the record!   October 22, 2007

God awful - this is more like a Tarantino knock-off than one of his actual films.br /br /Full of the usual laboured references designed to appeal to nerds who like to recite film dialogue (rants about Dave, Dee, Dozey, Mitch and Titch, and Italian Vogue are particularly tiresome) and dull 70s music.br /br /To make matters worse, the fake trailers (one of the main draws of Grindhouse) aren't included on the DVD!br /br /If you've seen this first, and are two minds about bothering with Planet Terror, please don't be put off. Planet Terror is absolutely awesome!br /
