4 out of 5 stars Classic 70's Tobe Hooper   June 7, 2005

Eaten Alive[not to be confused with the 1981 Cannibal flick by Umberto Lenzi]is the US title for Death Trap the classic 1976 follow up movie to Texas Chainsaw Massacre by Tobe Hooper.brThe locations are changed from the scorching sun of Texas to the humid swamps of Louisiana but the sick humour and low budget charm remain.brAfter a new prostitute is thrown out of a local brothel because she didnt agree to the needs of one of the customers[in this case a very young Robert'Freddy Krueger'England]she has no choice but to spend the night at the run-down Starlight Hotel and her host is crazy old Judd[Neville Brand in a fine performance]who has the habit of slicing up his guests and feeding them to his pet crocodile that he keeps in a swanp next to his hotel.Judd doesent disapoint his dangerous pet and promptly pitch forks the girl to death before she tossed into the crocs jaws.brVarious other characters arrive and are offed by Judd including the hookers father[Mel Ferrer]who is searching for his lost daughter.brDespite a similar story to Chainsaw Massacre,Death Trap was a complete change of pace and execution and cinema goers expecting a thrill ride like its predecessor probobly found it a little heavy going with its slow build up and one set location. That doesent mean its a bad movie and has wonderful EC comic style atmosphere,a good cast, spooky unnerving music and lashings of gory violence.brDeath Trap has had a bad history in the UK,where it never played cinemas and its video release saw it banned as a video nasty. It was re-released uncut here by Vipco a few years back[as Death Trap]but this was presented in a bad full-frame transfer. The best way to see this movie is this release[as Eaten Alive]from US distributor Elite. You get a nice non-anamorphic widescreen transfer[1.85:1]with plenty of detail and good colour although there is still a little print damage.Sound is a punchy Dolby 2.0 mono mix and extras consist of only the theatrical trailer.brWell worth picking up if you are a fan of Tobe or 70's low budget horror in general.brMovie-****brPicture-***brSound-**brExtras-*brRatings are out of five.

3 out of 5 stars Pet crocodiles,Brothels and a mad man!   November 19, 2000

This movie is really strange. The first scene in the movie shows a young Robert Englund trying to get a prostitute to do an "unspeakable" act! The prostitute who we guess isn't really a prostitute but a poor girl who has run from home leaves the brothel and goes to a creepy looking hotel run by Neville Brand who goes all crazy after first being perfectly normal and disposes of the hooker by feeding her to his pet crocodile!!! The father and sister comes to look for the sister and strange things begin to happen! Neville brand is fantastic as the mentally deranged Judd who for most the film mutters utter tosh!Robert Englund is good as Buck the Hooker loving rascal who books into Judds hotel with a young girl and they don't even get down to it as Buck also meets a sticky end! Look out for stars in the movie such as Stuart Whitman, Mel Ferrer and Carolyn Jones as the brothel madam! All in all it is a strange but entertaining movie with crazy dialogue and an even crazier musical score!
