My favourite film November 27, 2008 What else is there to say? This film will have you crying one way or another. A moving, beautifully musical film about the miners strike and a colliery band. A suberb performance by Pete Postlethwaite.
Classic September 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A true classic a film that I keep coming back to. Almost an underground film.Don't think of the politics it's only a film about people and their lives.
BITTERSWEET COMEDY WITH A FABULOUS SOUNDTRACK December 21, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The story is one of quiet desparation among miners who want to continue to work - despite the dangers and hardships of the profession but know that in the 1980s and early 90s the politics are against them and that the possiblity of a management review to keep their pit open is a sham. With no hope on the horizon the colliery band is on the verge of breaking up when in walks a girl with a flugel... I was never much of fan of brass bands - until I watched this film. The acting is superb, the script spot on but the music lifts the film into another dimension.
Absolutely Brilliant December 19, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This film has to be one of my all time favourites. It is honestly amazing, Its funny at times but also can be very sad, which is brilliant. I love it!
Great little movie November 6, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Probably the best way to describe this sentimental comedy about an amateur brass band in a Yorkshire mining town is Capra-esque. When the film isn't tickling us with its gentle humor, it is shamelessly assaulting our tear ducts. But it does this all quite well, so it's okay. Coursing throughout the entire film is a righteously angry tone that makes a surprising contrast with writer/director Mark Herman's previous effort, the Bronson Pinchot farce Blame It on the Bellboy. Pete Postlethwaite (In the Name of the Father) is the single-minded band conductor, and Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting) and Tara Fitzgerald (Sirens) provide the romantic interest. By the film's end, you will be made to feel very happy that Britain's Tories recently got defeated so resoundingly at the polls.
