Buy This Movie!! If you beleive in love! January 2, 2009 This is my favorite Gay movie! A good honest film. It's so refreshing to see a movie where the gay characters actually have a happy ending! Where 'Normally' we are to see gay people on celluloid suffer disease, Turn into homocidel nutters, and end up dead. What we get here is a great feel good movie. All the characters are beleiveable, in fact i've met simlar people in london myself. The cast gave great performance's Linda Henry (Eastenders) Always great, plays the wonderfully misguided but loveable mother, Sandra. Ben daniels (Cutting It) was great casting as down trodden Tony, Sandra's boyfriend. The leads( Jamie Ste ) Played by Glen Berry (Prime Suspect 4) and Scott Neal (The Bill) Were totally loveable. But for me the scene stealing star was Jamie and Ste's friend Leah. Fantastically played by Tameka Empson (Three Non Blondes). Written by ('Gimme Gimme Gimme's,) Jonathan Harvey. Directed by Hettie McDonald (The Fixer.) This is truly a wonderful coming out movie. Makes you smile!
Good film September 12, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Good film, I'm sick of all Hollywood films so lately I've been opting for different films. br /I found the relationship between Ste and Jamie really inviting, it grips you and challenges you to become a part of their world and that is what I gladly did. The only thing I felt that was missing was a little bit more intimacy and explanation between the two lads, one moment Ste was fighting against his feelings for Jamie and the next they are going to a gay pub together and declaring their relationship to the whole estate. br /But don't let this deter you, it's still a thought provoking and good film, it makes you realise that there is nothing wrong with being gay, who cares if you're sleeping with the same sex, love is the only thing that matters and is that hurting anybody? NO!br /Loved Leah (the next door neighbour), she's quirky and everytime she came on screen she always managed to crack me up.br /A must-see.
Love this film! June 9, 2008 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Aw - this is a great British "coming out" film. I loved it! The characters are all terrific - I love the mother and the girl next door! And the two leads are brilliant. Brilliant actors and very believable in their roles. It's so well written and acted I would very highly recommend it. It's a beauty!
Outstandingly emotional and heart tugging April 16, 2008 27 out of 28 found this review helpful
I watched this film by accident one week day evening and can say that within the first 5 minutes I was gripped. The acting was superb and although I could potentially pick faults in the script, it kind of takes away the whole essence of the film and what made it "Beautiful".br /br /I think that it's great that a British film has made me really stop and think about my past and indeed my present. Not many films have achieved that. Which of us can honestly say that in watching the scenes between Jamie and Ste that we haven't all felt and thought like they did? True, for straights then swap one of the guys for a girl but the effect is much the same.br /br /I found it sad that some reviewers thought that the accents were too much and should have been toned down. Hello folks, its London were talking about here. Quite a few of them really do talk like that and lets face it, wouldn't it really be dumbing down. That would ruin the film.br /br /I found Sandra particularly well cast and played. There was real emotion between her and Jamie. I only wish that all Mothers and indeed Fathers reacted in such a supportive fashion. Ste and Jamie were also superbly acted and believable to the extent that you connected with them both straight away. You can't help feeling emotional when they do. True the end of the film was a bit.....over done, but I don't think this detracts from the film in any way. I would like to have seen a sequel to Beautiful Thing and seen the effects of the first on both Ste and Jamie. It would have meant proper closure, however I think that for quite a few of us, this film perhaps hits a little too close to the mark about ourselves and hence our desire to see the next part. I know that's true of me.br /br /At the end of the day, the film was enhanced for me by the fact that all of the "sex" scenes where left to the imagination and you could read what you would out of it. This film really touches me deeply both emotionally and psychologically and I wish there where more of the same style, class and calibre of this. Not to everyone's taste to be sure but one that stays sitting in my mind every day and perhaps has even influenced the way I am towards others. Thank you so much for creating this most excellent and heart wringing film. I recommend it to everyone.br /.
