Amazon.co.uk Review You can never accuse director Danny Boyle of lacking ambition. ISunshine/I sees one of Britain?s most successful directors switching genre once more, as he tackles this gripping science fiction flick about a quest to re-ignite the dying sun. And he nails it, too, adding another plus to a CV that?s already covered a kids' film (IMillions/I), a big Hollywood blockbuster (IThe Beach/I), horror (I28 Days Later/I), and a pair of British classics (ITrainspotting/I and IShallow Grave/I). P Bursting out of the gate at a terrific pace, ISunshine/I then doesn?t take its foot off the accelerator for much of its near-two hour running time. Set around the crew of the Icarus II who find themselves on a life-saving mission, things soon start going awry, and while you?ll find no plot spoilers here, Boyle proves a dab hand at ratcheting up tension on the way to the big finale. P If anything, it?s the finale to ISunshine/I that does let the side down, not quite living up to the standard of what preceded it. But such is the strength of the ride to that point that it?s hard to complain. Especially when the cast, led by the always-magnetic Cillian Murphy, put in believable performances and get heavily into the spirit of the film. P Topped off with cracking effects that belie its modest budget, ISunshine/I is a real treat, not just for sci-fi fans, but for anyone who likes a strong, tense, thrilling night in front of a movie. --IJon Foster/I

Finally got round to watching it - Incredible January 6, 2009 I have been meaning to watch this for a long time and never got round to it, i had seen clips of it and it did admittedly look very slow. br /br /However, watching it straight through i became completely absorbed. I loved the concept and the story was very tight with no loose edges.br /br /If this had even a sprinkle of one or two Hollywood actors then this would be as big a hit as any of the corny US "Space" movies, which for me is a shame as this is an incredibly underrated movie and i am all the better for finally getting round to watching it.
A gem of a film! January 5, 2009 There is something about this film that just gets to me. I almost can't put my finger on it, the effects are dazzling, the performances are utterly believable and the music send chills down my spine (seriously, I cannot compliment the score enough, it's just brilliant). The story may seem a trifle daft to some, and yes the sudden switch from sci fi to slasher very late in the film is a bit of marmite plot twist but hey, its a talking point. The characters are developed as much as they need to be, the directing is thoughtful and the tension is built expertly, without the need to spell things out in black and white which is a rarity in modern cinema.br /br /I think the reason i love this film so much is that it caught me comletely by surprise, when I sat down to watch it I was totally prepared for a different kind of film. I am a big fan of Danny Boyle and was excited to see how he would approach a the sci fi genre and i wasn't dissapointed with the result. There is a mood and a feel to the whole experience that will either stay with you for days after watching or will fail from the outset to grab you. I guess people will always be split on this one. br /br /I must say though, there are reviewers on her comparing 'Sunshine' to films like 'Event Horizon' and 'Alien' and using that as a means to be super critical. I've seen 'Event Horizon' and 'Alien' and really do not see the comparisons, and to accuse Danny Boyle of ripping these films of is just hysterical. I appreciate it is not everyones cup of tea (and I would not be so ignorant as to accuse anyone who doesn't like it of being of lower intelligence) but to look for clever little references to other films that just don't stand up is plain silly, just because the film is about a crew on board a spaceship facing some kind of peril, doesn't mean its borrowing ideas from every sci fi classic ever made.br /'Ooommmb! he's ripping off 'Mission to Mars' cos, like, that was set in space too.' DUH!! I swear some people treat these film reviews like an a-level media studies exam question, 'compare and contrast the codes and conventions used in the film 'Sunshine' with other films of the same genre' hmmmm, no the real question is 'did you like the film? why? would you recommend it?'br /br /In conlusion then I would say don't watch this film with any expectations, adjust your filter and accept it for what it is (which is not 'deep impact' or 'armagedon') See how you get on, because if you like it you will really really like it. I think.
colourful, nonconforming, beautiful film December 10, 2008 Absolutely agree with David Morrison's review below. This film could be a difficult watch, it wanders back and forth between storyline, psychology, science, art and mystery - the end could also be seen as confusing, but again this is one of the points on the movie where it strays from normal story-telling to a more mindful projection.br /br /Personally I think this is a great sci-fi movie with great character and beautify - captures the sounds colours and stillness of space and its exploring vessels, to my delight there are even moments similar to Event Horizon and shades of Supernova etc...purchased this movie without having previously seen it, certain glad I did, a gem in my sci-fi collection.
So overrated! December 8, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've really looked forward to this film, as I am a fan of all sorts of sci-fi and of Danny Boyle; I read the good Doctor Kermode's review, which was glowing, so I am really disappointed with Sunshine. br /br /It starts off well, with plausable-enough concepts like reigniting fusion reaction in the sun with a huge bomb (not that far fetched really, compared to some truly stupid ideas out there - The Core for example), and realistic-seeming action and footage of the ship and details of the mission itself. br /br /Then about halfway through it starts to unravel. Characters start to put themselves at risk for no apparent reason, for example the whole idea that they would visit the Icarus 1 is ridiculous - there is no way they would risk the original mission to jolly off on such a pointless exercise, nor make the schoolboy error that leads to the first death. Then when they get there, more nonsense - why is there dust everywhere? Someone says something about dust being 90% human skin, which is an oft-quoted myth, and would only work with living humans anyway. Why did the crew apparently kill themselves? No explanation is offered other than a vague nod at something vaguely spiritual. How had the bogeyman survived on a broken-down ship for seven years? And why didn't the guy in the spacesuit trigger the mechanism, why did the other guy have to sacrifice himself? br /br /And then the real problem - the last section of the film, where the completely unneccesary bogeyman (Sam Neill or Mark Strong? - take your pick its the same character) appears, just in time to find all the crew mysteriously on their own - in true horror film tradition - so he can pick them off one at a time. Who will be last? Why the pretty girl and the leading man of course! A truly awful idea that is accompanied by annoying blurry optical effects and a bizarre Solaris-style sequence at the very end which to be honest left me with the impression that Garland and Boyle had run out of ideas and had no idea how to end it (personally I think Garland ran out of ideas after The Beach, but that's another story). Solaris and 2001 earned the right to such ambiguous/ ambitious endings, but this mess most certainly did not. br /br /I have no idea which version of the film Mark Kermode saw but the one I saw is a definate 2 stars out of 5. The cinematography and score save it from one star.br /
True Epic December 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This film is a true sci-fi epic unlike anything else I've seen. Danny Boyle hits us once again with a film of pure beauty twinned with thrills and chills. It gets the adrenaline pumping around your body, while at the same time getting the adrenaline pumping around your brain. br /If you have a closed-minded view on how films should be, or need everything explained to you, this isn't the film for you. I watched it in the cinema and was taken aback by the beautiful visual effects and emotional soundscapes. The enlightenment of Searle really makes you think as does the the introduction of Pinbacker. As Capa goes to release the bomb in the grand finale, I really felt the sense of struggle and determination. The feeling of doom and debate of humanity is really strongly felt between all the characters and you can't help but dread what it would be like to be in their shoes. br /John Murphy and Underworld do a great job with the soundtrack, emphasising and sometimes creating the feeling of hope and despair in equal measure.br /Cillian Murphy is once again at top form. He really seems to have a hold on Capa's good-natured, but human character. Mark Strong is also very chilling and Rose Byrne remains her innocent-looking self.br /The story is unpredictable, thrilling and at times confusing, but with confusion also comes the silence in the room as the credits roll, because everyone starts running the movie back in their heads trying to figure it all out.br /Danny Boyles directing is, as always, fantastic and the composition of the visuals, script, acting and soundtrack is near perfect. Sunshine really goes to show how much of a versatile filmmaker he is.br /br /This film ticks all the right boxes for me, but it's not for everyone. Rent it before you buy it.
