Product Description
European import. Plays on standard UK DVD players in English without subtitles.ROME trilogy collection: ANCIENT ROME, THE RISE AND FALL OF AN EMPIRE: An epic recreation of an era ruled by the world's first superpower en a major new six part, dramatised documentary. Detailing defining moments of Roman history, the series looks at the Jewish uprising, Julius Caesar's victory, among other things and culminates with the downfall of the Empire, itself._MURDER IN ROME: Directed by Dave Stewart, and based on a genuine trial record, it's set in Rome in 81BC. Sextus Roscius is accused of murdering his father, and found guilty he'll face an agonising death. However, the stakes are just as high for Cicero, the lawyer defending him. If he wins the case, he could be killed._JULIUS CEASAR, GREATEST BATTLES: In 52BC, the future of Rome and Gaul - and that of their peoples - hangs in the balance. It will be determined in three great encounters. The battles are the culmination of a momentous personal duel between two great leaders. A duel, which this documentary recreates. The name of one leader, Julius Caesar, will resound through history. His rival a young chieftain called Vercingetorix is virtually unknown. Vercingetorix's people, the Gauls, are history's victims. In a bitter eight year campaign, through what is known as France, Caesar killed a million people, took a million more hostage and destroyed 800 cities. Julius Caesar's Greatest Battle is told through the eyes of Mark Corby a Roman historian with a professional admiration for Caesar and Neil Faulkner an archaeologist for whom Rome's great achievement was no more than robbery with violence. Mark takes on the role of Caesar and Neil that of Vercingetorix in this gripping 50 minute documentary.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for the series, not the quality of the product   September 27, 2007

I am a big fan of the series called "Ancient Rome". I've watched it a number of times. It's a fantastic series, beautifully dramatised and historically accurate - a fantastic way to learn history. "Murder in Rome" is the story of one of Cicero's (the father of modern rational western law), greatest cases, told in the style of a riveting historical "courtroom who dunnit?". "Julius Caesar" focuses on his battle with the Gallic warlord Vercingetorix in Alesia, Gaul. I'm not so much a fan of historians putting themselves "into the minds" of ancient figures, but nonetheless, it's a great documentary, interspersed with dramaticised footage.br /br /As usual, the BBC documentary folk show why they make positively the best historical and natural history documentaries in the world - bar none!br /br /On the negative side, the DVDs I received look like an authenic BBC box-set, and the picture quality is perfect, but unfortunetly, the narrative audio in places where there is a accompanying soundtrack, is almost inaudible. Elsewhere it's fine. Somehow the audio's been remixed and no-one's paid much attention to the quality. Every other DVD in my collection is fine, so it's not the player. Just watch out for this.
