Amazon.co.uk Review
You can never accuse director Danny Boyle of lacking ambition. iSunshine/i sees one of Britain?s most successful directors switching genre once more, as he tackles this gripping science fiction flick about a quest to re-ignite the dying sun. And he nails it, too, adding another plus to a CV that?s already covered a kids' film (iMillions/i), a big Hollywood blockbuster (iThe Beach/i), horror (i28 Days Later/i), and a pair of British classics (iTrainspotting/i and iShallow Grave/i).p/p Bursting out of the gate at a terrific pace, iSunshine/i then doesn?t take its foot off the accelerator for much of its near-two hour running time. Set around the crew of the Icarus II who find themselves on a life-saving mission, things soon start going awry, and while you?ll find no plot spoilers here, Boyle proves a dab hand at ratcheting up tension on the way to the big finale.p/p If anything, it?s the finale to iSunshine/i that does let the side down, not quite living up to the standard of what preceded it. But such is the strength of the ride to that point that it?s hard to complain. Especially when the cast, led by the always-magnetic Cillian Murphy, put in believable performances and get heavily into the spirit of the film.p/p Topped off with cracking effects that belie its modest budget, iSunshine/i is a real treat, not just for sci-fi fans, but for anyone who likes a strong, tense, thrilling night in front of a movie. i--Jon Foster/i

2 out of 5 stars Poor movie, technically good looking   December 26, 2008

I bought this movie on Blu-Ray in spite of a certain amount of apprehension after reading some of the other reviews. Yesterday, I watched it with the family and was not at all impressed.br /br /The movie is mostly technically beautiful. But the plot is so thin and full of holes it hurts, and it gets worse as the movie progresses towards its increasingly obvious and bizarre ending.br /br /Not recommended. My copy will be on sale on ebay soon :)br /

3 out of 5 stars Great picture, decent film   November 30, 2008
Sunshine is a very enjoyable space thriller/action movie but feel its been done better before, especially by the excellent and much more creepy Event Horizon.br /Its only spoilt by some annoying camera work and an over use of music.br /Nearly every scene that involves any kind of action or suspense has loud dance type music played over the top of it.br /The camera blur and shake towards the end of the movie does become more than a little annoying and you get the impression that the film is trying to be too cool and too hip. The ending is also a bit of a let down being to sentimental and leaving questions unanswered. br /The acting is good throughout and the effects are amazing, especially on blu-ray, but considering how few good space movies are out there recently this is worth the buy.

3 out of 5 stars "For seven years I spoke to God"   July 19, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

It is the year 2057. The sun is about to peter-out in about 50years. A mission was sent seven years ago to reignite the sun; the ship disappeared. Now a new mission and last chance.br /br /We are now introduced to the standard crew mix over the obligatory eating scene. The mission is reviled. We learn of each person's personality and quirks. And it takes a long slow time. (For people with Blu-ray you can fast-forward with sound on, it does not sound Mickey Mouse.) Soon we find the fate of the previous ship. We also suffer from an accident caused by miscalculation. Will these mishaps jeopardize the mission and the human fate?br /br /The film is a tad slow probably by design and there are lots of flashy visuals. Many look like they ware borrowed from "Solaris" (2002.) The external accouterments aside, the film is a well formulated standard Sci-Fi with all the elements needed. We have each character meting his/her cuisses and how they deal or do not deal with it. There are moral and technical difficulties to deal with. The story has the "stay in the car" or "Don't open that!" feel. And of course the standard twists and turns with the surprise (supposed to be surprise) ending.br /br /The whole film could have been and pretty much has been done in an hour or half hour episode of Star Trek. Not all Star Trek's had space monsters.br /br /-------------------------------------------------------------------------br /The Blu-ray version has a couple of commentaries that make the movie a tad more attractive and the obligatory extras.br /
