Product Description
PLOT SUMMARY: The genius behind the music. The madness behind the man. The untold love story of Ludwig von Beethoven. This film deals with life and death of the legendary Ludwig van Beethoven. Beside all the work he is known for, the composer once wrote a famous love letter to a nameless beloved and the movie tries to find out who this beloved was. Not easy as Beethoven has had many women in his life. ABOUT THE DVD: This is a Columbia Tristar release for the NETHERLANDS market (Region 2 PAL format, exactly the same as in the UK, so will play fine on all standard DVD players in this country), so the text on the rear of the packaging is in Dutch (though all menus are in English, so are easily navigated. The film is presented in widescreen (2.35:1 ratio). Subtitles are available in English, German, French, Dutch and Danish (or can be switched off altogether). Audiotracks on the disc are the original English, German or French (all in Dolby Digital 5.1). Extra features include an audio commentary by the director Bernard Rose, a documentary 'Beloved Beethoven', the original theatrical trailer.

This is a romantic detective story, as one of Beethoven's surviving friends tries to track down the "Immortal Beloved" to whom his last scrawled wishes have bequeathed his musical works.

Beautifully filmed, to my mind the film is a little uneven, though it does show how hard the great composer's life was in places: born with congenital syphilis to an unmarried illiterate girl (his life is often used as an example of the wickedness and shortsightedness of aborting babies thought to have little chance of success or happiness in life), eventually completely deaf, thwarted in love and in his ambitions for his nephew who might have been, in fact, his own son. The film also shows his artistic triumphs over adversity. I suppose one could say that Beethoved was the first great composer who stood as a truly independent "artist", as distinct from one patronized and controlled by secular or religious magnates (Palestrina, Bach, Haydn, even Mozart to some degree); the selfstanding "artist" composer type moved later to become the norm in, say, the "case of" Wagner, among many others.

Interesting, but not a film I would really want to see more than once.
