4 out of 5 stars Blu-ray improvement over the DVD   December 28, 2008
I was wondering how this would look after seeing some reviews. I was pleasantly surprised. There is some softness but I think it's just where the camera people missed the focus (e.g. on wide shots) and due to different filming techniques to more modern material. It still looks good and Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman come off very well from the Blu-ray version, each looking more convincing in their characters due to the extra detail in their costume and performances. Great film and a good Blu-ray.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the upgrade but could be better   October 30, 2008

Die Hard is probably the greatest action film ever made and so much was riding on this transfer. Well, it's pretty good actually! I've seen reviews that rate it as 3/5 from critics (picture quality) but it's actually a bit better then that. The 3D feeling is in effect and the colours are nice too. The sound is DTS 5.1 and it sounds great through a sorround system. The picture could be better in close ups with hair and beards ect... the faces (pores)aren't as sharp as they should be. This isn't a demo disc but it's not as bad as reported. It is worth the upgrade from the DVD with a 3.5/5 transfer. Not bad for a film that's twenty years old.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good hi-def transfer   October 15, 2008

I bought the Blu Ray version of Die Hard after seeing the film many times on DVD. I wanted to see if hi-def could make one of the best actions films, even better! For such an old film (in Blu Ray terms) the transfer has been done very well. Obvioulsy the quality isn't as good as a film released today but it does make the overall experience better than the DVD. The sound quality is also a step up and when connected to a surround sound system the difference is quite obvious.br /As for the film itself, what can you say about Die Hard, everyone knows it! This has to be the film that started the genre in the way we know it now, and boy did it do it well. John McClane never gets boring and this is my favourite action movie to date.

4 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Transfer   March 20, 2008

Bruce Willis is John McLane - a cop from New York, home visiting his wife and kids in California. When a bunch of European terrorists take over the corporation his wife works for, John is forced to take control, and help the cops sort this out. br /br /There's a lot that's been said about Die Hard, so I won't really go on about the movie, it's plot and the relationships therein, but more the HD transfer. Lets face it, if you're looking at this you know Die Hard, and want a better copy, as you're a fan. Well it's not a bad transfer, the colours are good, but not as exciting and vivid as The Pursuit Of Happyness: so far, the best BD transfer for me. The video is AVC, with an average of 20MB/s - which isn't bad. I would have expected a bit higher - as there's not much on the disk, 8 trailers for Die Hard and a couple for the other Fox films. There's also the newscasts, but they're in a pretty bad shape. I am surprised there's no featurette like on the DVD.br /br /The audio is to die for though, DTS 5.1 - running at 1.5MB/s, not too bad at all. There's a few languages too, but no AD, which is a pity, as it's well worth the description.br /br /The film itself is worth the 18, but the extras are thin on the ground, and the picture could have been better really, after all it's only 20 years ago since Die Hard was made.br /br /4/5 for the film, 3/5 for the HD transfer and 1/5 for the extras.br /br /Probably best to stick to the DVDs unless you're a real Blu-Ray die hard
