Sin City - No 11 - All Time List 2008 May 14, 2008 br /Sin City is a stylish, violent, gripping movie - taken almost identically from Frank Miller's comic book you know what you are expecting and Sin City does not disappoint. Sexy beyond belief with Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson and Brittany Murphy all dripping with sex appeal seldom seen in films, scantily clad and plain and simply gorgeous - it works for Sin City. That's before we mention the girls of Old Town.br /Graphic, stylised violence of first class order - especially in Marv's story which is probably my favourite - always quick pacing, tough gritty and exciting with a story that'll keep you watching. Elijah Wood plays his role really well, much more convincing than as Frodo in LOTR.br /If you like a slow paced, character driven movies without much violence then I doubt Sin City is for you - there really isn't much character development here - but why does it need it? I don't think it does - not when a movie is dripping with energy and style like this.br /The Recut version adds a few minutes of scenes to each of the stories and it is interesting to watch each story separately a la the comics instead of mashed up as in the cinema release.br /br /Audiences that crave action movies with girls, guts, and gore will find this glossy black and white tribute to Frank Miller's graphic novels and film noir thrillers more than engrossing and completely satisfying.br /Roll on Sin City 2 for more of the same - glorified violence - I love it.br /
superb April 26, 2008 This film hits you like a punch in the face. Frank millers work is faithfully adapted into a brilliant film by Robert rodriguez. I have been a fan of Rodriguez's work for a long time and this is testament to his abilities. The stunning visuals and super acting, especially by mickey rourke, make this a brilliant buy. This set contains the theatrical and extended film along with a pile of extras.
A work of art March 31, 2008 Sin City is a masterpiece, it has to be said. From the stylized masking of colours to the script to the editing and after effects this movie is phenomenal!br /You can watch this film time after time and you will never get bored or cease to be amazed. I highly recommend this film to any movie-lover!
Original, Exciting and Unbelievably Entertaining February 15, 2008 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
Sin City, based on Frank Miller's successful series of comic books of the same name is an intense thrill ride from start to finish. The film was directed by Miller himself as well as Robert Rodriguez, along with Quentin Tarantino, who directed a small segment of the final cut.br /br /The ensemble cast is tremendous and includes (among others): Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, Brittany Murphy, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Mickey Rourke, Michael Madsen, Josh Hartnett, Benicio Del Toro, Elijah Wood and Rutger Hauer.br /br /The stories of the various different characters and the consequences their actions have on their counterparts are ingeniously interweaved to form a narrative that is constantly moving at break neck speed.br /br /The story begins with Hartigan (Bruce Willis), a detective of Sin City with one day left from retirement, in pursuit of a sick child killer. The ensuing events are violent, unexpected and exhilerating. After Hartigan's story has been told, Rodriguez and Miller move the action along to Marv, a man determined to find out who killed the girl of his dreams. This leads him to the girls of Old Town, the hookers who work the streets there, enforcing their own laws and looking after themselves. After a series of events leads to a possible war between the police and the prostitutes, action has to be taken by all of the characters to prevent it before it is too late. It is during the second half of the film that all of the characters' connections to one another become clear and the story trundles on towards its shocking conclusion.br /br /Usually a film featuring strippers, prostitutes, extreme violence and explosions would be considered "bad taste" cinema, but Sin City is so beautifully acted, shot and directed that it is an astounding masterpiece. The cast are all on top form and the production values are tremendous. Sin City is a must-see!br /br /The DVD extras are excellent, with the second disc featuring the extended director's cut of the film which only adds to the experience, and offer an insight into the creative process behind the film.
A Modern Masterpiece? January 29, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
First and foremost Sin City is a fantastic film. Directed by Frank Miller (the author of the graphic novels which this film remains suprising faithful to) and Robert Rodriguez, Sin City is digitally filmed in crisp black and white tones with occasional splashes of colour (red lipstick, blonde hair, blue eyes) which give the film an extremely stylisitc appearance.br /br /The star studded cast (Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke) for the most part give brilliant performances (Elijah Wood gives a fantastically eery performance as Kevin the mute cannibal, any thoughts of Frodo are quickly forgotten after his first scene, in fact the only real stomach churning scene in the film is given courtesy of elijah wood, a hacksaw, razorwire, gasoline, several lengths of rubber tubing and lots of bright white blood.)br /br /The film is told in through 3 seperate stories which intertwine pulp fiction style. Without wishing to spoil anything the plots involve peadophilia, cannibalism and a kill bill style rampage. If you are squeemish you probably won't enjoy this film. br /br /My only real complaint is that most of the dialogue in the film is given in the form of monologues rather than conversation between characters (of which there is little). This is so the film remains as faithful as possible to Miller's origional works, however it does mean that at times the dialogue becomes flat and veers towards boring. Thankfully the dialogue in the film never lasts for very long and is interspersed with the (brutal) action sequences. br /br /Sin City then is a thoroughly enjoyable action film and, though not perfect, deserves a place in the DVD library of any fan of crime films. br /br /br /br /br /br /br /
