Amazon.co.uk Review ISuperbad/I, for many, was the surprise hit of the year. Yet when you consider the comedy pedigree sitting behind the camera, perhaps it?s not that much of a turn up. Director Greg Mottola, for instance, cut his teeth on episodes of IArrested Development/I and the underrated US show IUndeclared/I. Co-writer Evan Goldberg has credits on the US Ali G show, while his partner in scribe is Seth Rogen, star of 2007?s other breakout comedy, IKnocked Up/I. And with that film?s director, Judd Apatow, also on the production team, it?s understandable to see where ISuperbad/I gets its quality from. P Yet in spite of all of these names behind the camera, ISuperbad/I is powered by Jonah Hill, previously seen in mainly supporting roles, as the foul-mothed Seth. In conjunction with Michael Cera?s Evan, he bursts his way through a film that sees the pair of them trying to buy booze to go to a girl-filled party, before they go their separate ways to college. P Hill and Cera are strong in their lead roles, and keep ISuperbad/I motoring even through its quieter moments. But the scene stealer has to be Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fogell, or--courtesy of his fake ID--McLovin. When he encounters two cops, played by Rogen and Bill Hader, comedy gold swiftly ensues. P ISuperbad/I isn?t as consistently funny as IKnocked Up/I, and its running time may outstay its welcome a little, but it?s still a tough film to knock. It?s simple and straightforward aim, to sit on your screen and generate plenty of laughs, is comfortably achieved, and its rewatch value is high as well. Well worth a look. --ISimon Brew/I

Don't listen to the critics... January 8, 2009 This film is brilliant, hilarious from start to finish with only a dip in the comedy for a slight serious tone toward the end. An excellent film that will have you laughing from start to finish, with good re-watch value as some jokes take a couple of watches to really sink in, generally at how ridiculous the boys situation becomes. Really not to be taken too seriously so if you're up for something fun to watch with little in the way of complex story line, Superbad's your man.br /5 stars comedy, great movie to watch with friends or on your bill.
What is worse? Superbad or a stay at Guantanamo Bay? December 13, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The only reason why I watched this film until the end, was because I couldn't believe how super-bad this movie was. It is actually clinically fascinating to try and understand how this movie was ever made.br /br /Truly unfunny from start to finish (okay, the crazy cops were mildly amusing but other than that..), it baffles me how anyone ever reached into their wallets to fund this mess.br /br /Poorly written and badly acted, I guarantee you will be so bored you will be gnawing your own elbows off long before the end.br /br /Can I give zero stars?
I wouldn't watch this film again even if I got paid! December 12, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a load of rubbish! I can tell exactly what the director was thinking whilst writing the script: 'I know! I can't think of anything actually funny to put in, so I'll just make the whole thing full of sex-based jokes that immature people will laugh at'.br /br /The only thing positive that I can say about this is Mclovin, when he appears. But that is like taking a car that is terrible in every way and saying that you quite like the seat belt buckle. I can think of dogs that could write something funnier! I first saw this film on a coach, so unfortunately I didn't have the freedom of being able to walk out. From what I have heard from friends who saw this in the cinema, about half of the people in there walked out during the film.br /br /If you like comedy that requires any kind of intelligence, give this one a miss, for the sake of your health!
A step up from "Pie" November 11, 2008 Comparisons with American Pie are inevitable but in my opinion Superbad is the better of the two films. That's not to say that it isn't full of male teenage obsessions, bad language and sexual references. It certainly is. However in my opinion the film's intentions are in the right place while the American Pie series went for the "gross out" option a bit too often.br /br /The plot is familiar. Nerdy teenagers are worried about their lack of sexual experience as the end of high school approaches. An unexpected opportunity presents itself as they are invited to a "cool girls" party. The catch is they have offered to supply the alcohol for the party. They believe obtaining the booze will almost certainly result in them reaching the "Holy Grail".br /Their attempts to get alcohol lead them into more and more outlandish situations as the evening progresses.br /br /Perhaps what sets this film apart is the genuine attempt to deal with the teenage male relationships. The two main protagonists have been best friends forever. However one of them will be going to an Ivy League college, the other won't. The underlying tension both of them feel is dealt with well in the film.br /br /One negative point for me was that I thought the incompetent cops (Seth Rogen and Bill Hader) had too big a role in the film. They are funny in the robbery scene but after that they almost become the main characters and I felt this just dragged out the film.br /br /The performances are excellent. Michael Cera and Jonah Hill strike the right note as the best friends. Christopher Mintz-Plasse is very good as the kid so nerdy even the nerds are embarrassed to be seen with him.br /br /Some of the humour is very broad and aimed at a mostly male audience but the film would be enjoyed by most people.br /
Worst Film Ever August 28, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Firstly, i didn't expect much when this film started and much to my suprise my expectations grew worse as the film continued.br /br /There are jokes that will make you laugh, but only if you have the intelligence lower than a 5 year old with severe learning difficulties. Now don't get me wrong, i have enjoyed previous films made by the same people, it's just that everything about the film is lack-lustre, from the performances to the script.br /br /It seems that the writers just tried to make a film that would attract people because of their previous successes.br /br /So i strongly recommend you go elsewhere if you want a comedy, as the only thing funny about this debacle is the attempt the actors make to save their credibility.br /
