3 out of 5 stars An Above Average Indie   December 30, 2008

Jamie Bell plays Hallam, a messed up teenager living in Scotland with voyeuristic tendencies. It's a year after his beloved mother's suicide. Hallam deals with his mother's death by spying on people. He lives with his dad his dad's girlfriend Verity (Claire Forlani) (mistress when his mother was alive) his sister Jenny. br /Hallam decides to move to London. He gets a job washing dishes at a hotel. Here he meets Kate (Sophia Myles) he becomes obsessed with her because she has a strong resemblance to his late mother. br /br /`Hallam Foe' is an above average indie film. I enjoyed it, but I didn't like it enough to go out of my way to watch it again. While Hallam has depth charm I can't say the same for the rest of the cast, especially the women who are much undeveloped. br /The sexual chemistry between Sophia Myles Jamie Bell is strangely obvious. br /The movie succeeds in being quirky original, but the character of Hallam is too creepy to be relatable, he's not particularly likeable to say the least. The one thing found most believable loved about the film is the unlikely relationship between Hallam Kate. br /br /In conclusion a good film, not essential viewing but if you can watch it on TV or borrow it from someone, then I would advise you do, just to take a look. Its definitely not as good as (director) David Mackenzie's first offering `About Adam'. br /If you liked this then I would recommend: `Control' `The Squid And The Whale'. br /

3 out of 5 stars Nice Badger!   December 27, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Hallam Foe is a quirky movie exploring the emotional difficulties experienced by a teenage boy after the untimely and suspicious death of his mother. It examines loss and longing, guilt and helplessness, love and obsession. It's the way in which these themes are dealt with that puts the quirk into the movie and the reason why it's only partially successful. It's not always easy to accept the way the characters behave. There is simply too much improbable behaviour, particularly regarding the relationships between the troubled teen and the women he encounters. A little more realism would have added some necessary gravitas to a story that's meant to be weightier than it manages to be.

3 out of 5 stars Wasn't sure when I watched it - but I'm still thinking about it ...   December 4, 2008
... so it can't be bad, and it isn't. In fact, it's quite good.br /br /It's an odd film though. Very well acted and filmed, I watched it a few days ago and have finally realised it's 'flaw'.br /br /It just isn't the sort of film you expect to be set in Scotland. Had this been made in France, I suspect it would become a classic. I have no rational basis for this conclusion other than the fact that I watch a lot of French cinema and both plot and direction felt very 'French' - if I elaborated further, I would give aspects of the story away.br /br /It is worth watching, if only for Jamie Bell's very impressive performance, but it does feel as though it's set in the wrong time (it didn't feel like a 21st century script) or place.br /br /Ultimately though, it is a very brave, thought-provoking and very unusual film.

3 out of 5 stars Jamie Bell comes of age   August 14, 2008
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

It's very refreshing to see a British actor who isn't churning out movie after movie on the Hollywood conveyor belt. Jamie Bell clearly knows the type of films he wants to be associated with and is bold enough and brave enough to do it. After seeing him in the incredible "Dear Wendy" it was clear he had the ability play the lead, and in Hallam Foe he does so beautifully.br /Hallam Foe is an enjoyable "quirky" film held together by Bell's strong performance. Okay, so it won't be to everyone's taste but if you want to see a fun, if somewhat disturbing, British movie that doesn't rely on Messrs Statham, Jones or Dyer, or football violence then sit back and enjoy Hallam Foe.

4 out of 5 stars Impresive home grown talent in a very good film   June 6, 2008

This film keeps you watching to the very end and never bores. The story line is continuous and acting is on the whole very good. I'm not going to give a full synopsis I rented this film and think this adds to the quality of home grown film talent we have.
