5 out of 5 stars Great Scottish/American collaboration   December 26, 2008
Local Hero is a wholesome story of corporate America meets rural Scotland and modern technology meets old world tradition.br /br /Starring Burt Lancaster and a few other faces that will be known to UK audiences (such as Rikki Fulton and John Gordon Sinclair), Local Hero tells the tale of 'MacIntyre' who is depatched by Knox Oil and Gas in Houston, Texas to negotiate the purchase of a slice of the Scottish coastline in order to convert it into an oil refinery and processing area. br /br /A number of sub-plots run throughout the story - such as love interests, environmentalism, star-gazing, animal rights, the rise of therapists, and perhaps, above all, a feeling that money can't buy you everything.br /br /Local Hero captures the mood of the early 80's oil boom in Scotland and also has a great soundtrack - delivered by Mark Knopfler, another Great Scot. This DVD version also contains an intriguing 24 minute interview with the writer and Director of the movie, Bill Forsyth. Perhaps the most revealing anecdote in this 'extra' feature is that the village and the beach scenes were actually filmed 120 miles apart from each other.br /br /Overall, an entertaining 1 hour and 46 minutes, which, despite the relatively modest budget, still manages to engage the viewer and raise moral issues - as well as probably making you want to finally book that weekend break in a remote corner of the north of Scotland.

3 out of 5 stars An American in Furness   November 3, 2008

I missed Local Hero first time around. Despite it being generally well received and carrying it's positive credentials into the DVD age,it was always a film that I promised myself I must watch some day. Finally that day arrived....Twenty 25 years on !br /Those who have watched those quirky culture clash TV series like Northern Exposure, Two thousand acres of sky, Hamish Macbeth etc etc, will be familiar with the formula. Sophisticated urbanites meet eccentric rustics who are actually a lot smarter than they're given credit for. Q lots of knowing winks and japes at the city slickers expense.br /For me after seeing the above TV series BEFORE Local Hero, I had unknowingly, been given the main course before the the starter. I found the film lifeless and flat compared to what followed on the small screen in the nineties.br /Despite having Burt Lancaster in a starring role, the rest of the cast just lacked any spark or depth. The casts' characterisation was hollow and the 'Joel Fleishman' figure was strangely remote and lacking in personality. The storyline was dreary and predictable and despite offering the odd occasional visual vignette or faintly amusing line, just meandered to a pointless conclusion.br /I was surprised and disappointed at just how empty the whole experience was ?br /

5 out of 5 stars I've died and gone to heaven!   November 2, 2008
Only available on VHS until now and boy am I glad its available at last.br /br /Every now and then a small film captures the heart, The Full Monty was one. This is just such a film. A gentle comedy, not rib tickling, rip roaringly histerical but mild, gentle and one not to be forgotten. br /br /The cast is perfect with no one trying to upstage anyone else. It is obvious that the actors loved and believed in this low budget British film from the early 1980's. The biggest name is Burt Lancaster who is only in it every now and then. The next well known name in the UK is Fulton Mackay who was one of the warders in Porridge or maybe Dennis Lawson who played Wedge Antilles in the Star Wars films and was more recently in Casualty (or was it Holby City?). So as you can see its more of a character film than a star studied extravaganza.br /br /An American oil company wants to buy an entire Scottish village so send in someone to buy it for them. The villagers all know and want to sell and be rich, the oil man doesn't know they know and thinks he can get it for a song if he doesn't let on and one of the villagers will not sell for any price, oh and is that a mermaid I see? Perhaps not.br /br /There is one excellent scene with the local vicar (from Africa) and all the locals trying to hide but I won't spoil it if you haven't seen it.br /br /Take my advice, get this and be taken away for a couple of hours to a place we all yearn for but most will never achieve. Excellent

5 out of 5 stars An undeniable Bill Forsyth classic   September 1, 2008

How do you follow the marvellous Gregory's Girl? Bill Forsyth somehow managed the almost impossible with this warm, witty and affectionate comedy. The settings are memorable, the dialogue merits watching again and again and the direction moves things along while respecting the sedate pace of life in the Scottish Highlands. For those who haven't yet seen this glorious film I guarantee it will last long in the memory with Mark Knopfler's guitar work the perfect match to the remote locations. If you haven't managed to catch this movie yet do yourself a favour; you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Quintesentially Scottish.   July 30, 2008

For me, this is all about what it means to be Scottish. br /br /A place where the restless soul of the American capitalist yearning for a warm community, open skies and peace of mind meets the entepreneurial, world-climbing, gregarious spirit of the fun-loving Russian communist. br /br /Fulton MacKay is the anchor, the living reminder of the importance of roots, community and the environment, in an age where all three are swept aside for greed and gain. br /br /I laughed many times, I sighed, I missed all the characters as soon as the movie ended. br /br /Someone give Donald Trump a copy and show the guy how to have some class.
