3 out of 5 stars A huge improvement on the Pratchett dramatisations of the past   January 2, 2009
Having endured some of the dramatisations on the small/computer screen of Terry Pratchett's books in the past, the Hogfather was a huge relief.br /br /I'm not usually a huge David Jason fan but he was excellent in this. Death was pretty wooden but the choice of Ian Richardson for the voice of Death was brilliant. br /br /If you're a fan of the Discworld novels this is definitely worth watching.br /br /

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time Favorite DVDs   October 30, 2008

I absolutely love anything and everything pertaining to discworld; I have 2 characters on the Discworld online game, one of which is a newbie helper. I've listened to every single one of the discworld books at least twice, and preordered the Colour of Magic DVD the very second I possibly could. With all that being said, I simply had to get my hands on this movie as soon as I heard it existed. Fortunately, I have a region free DVD player, so I ended up purchasing this region 2 2 disc edition of Hogfather. I can't say enough about how much I lovebr /this movie. It remains extremely faithful to the book; in a lot of cases, dialogue is word for word out of the book, something which, at least in my humble opinion, is all to rare in book to movie adaptations. Another treat for me was that Nigel Planer, the narrator of the first 23 Discworld audio books, played the part of Sidney the wizard in the movie. As if that wasn't awesome enough, David Jason, who is currently one of my two favorite actors along side Hugh Laurie, played the part of Albert brilliantly. I thought that Ian Richardson did a fantastic job as the voice of death; he sounded just like I would imagine Death sounding from the books. Evrything I've already mentioned would be more than enough to earn this movie 5 stars as far as I'm concerned, but the real icingbr /on the cake, for me at least, was when I discovered that the region 2 version of the Hogfather DVD which I had purchased included audio description for blind viewers. As a blind individual, this fact in and of itself immediatley catipolted the Hogfather DVD into my top 10 favorites. It was great to know everything that was going on, while still watching the movie by myself. Further more, I was able to watch this movie with a blind friend, and even though he knew nothing about discworld, he was still able to follow what was going on and he ended up enjoying it almost as much as I did. I'm planning to share this movie with my parents over the Christmas/Hogswatch holiday and hope that they'll enjoy it too. If I were forced to come up with something negative to say about this DVD, the only thing I could possibly consider a flaw, and I'll be the first to admit that it's hardly even worth mentioning, is that I think that Tony Robinson should have played the part of Knobby Knobs; just based on the fact that he played the part of Baldrick in Black Adder. I could be completely off base with regards to thinking that this would be a good change, however, so please feel free to take my opinion regarding that issue with a pound or two of salt.br /In all seriousness, though, I would most definitely rate this movie adaptation of Hogfather 10 stars. I don't know if audio description is going to be available on the Colour of Magic DVD, or even if it was available on the Region 1 edition of Hogfather, but I would certainly hope so. In my humble opinion, audio description should be as readily available as closed captioning, but that's not at all relevant to this review.br /Bottom line: If you even remotely enjoy good British humor, fantasy, discworld or even if you're just in search of a different kind of Christmas movie, this DVD is an absolute must buy. br /In closing, I can't help adding that if you enjoyed this movie and end up becoming a discworld fan, or if you're already a discworld fan, or even if you just enjoy online gaming, you should come and visit the discworld online game. The address is discworld.atuin.net port 4242. My characters, Eponine and Ramie would be more than happy to talk with or help out any newcomers to the game.

4 out of 5 stars I shall be brief   July 31, 2008

I've never read Hogfather, but I loved the film. The Colour of Magic had better CGI effects, and I'm a big fan of the character who was away in Fourecks during this dark time of the year- fighting fot his life, apparently. I hadn't read the Last Continent then so I thought he was Sideney at first, then one of the wizards surrounding Ridcully.br /I liked David Jason in both roles, as with Nigel Planer. Ed Coleman made a good Ponder. Enough said. Anyone who wishes to go further into the subject...?

1 out of 5 stars How can this be so wrong...   April 7, 2008

Why? But why (?!!) should it have to last for 2x90 minutes ?br /br /Should it be because Sky had to fill some gaps in its Xmas' TV schedule at the time...?br /br /As a result, in any case, this long-awaited theatrical Hogfather version desperately lacks the pace (even flirting with a downright feel of boredom at times), humour, witt and dynamism that, fortunately, overwhelm the novel.br /br /Yes, indeed : sets and costumes are very nice. But when you are more than 10 years old, you expect a bit more from such an "Hollywoodian" production, with an obvious huge budget at disposal. Perhaps some of it should have been put towards a more apt Director...?br /br /In short, Discworld's fans, keep well away!

2 out of 5 stars Could Do Better   March 20, 2008

As a long-standing Pratchett fan (yes, I have all the books.. and the maps.. and other stuff..) I looked forward to Hogfather. Unfortunately, although the attention to detail is good, it feels like most of the humour has been distilled out and left on one side.br /br /The script follows the book and it's plot extremely well, but I despair at the wooden acting. Done properly it should have had me rolling in the aisles with laughter, yet I got all the way through the first part with barely a giggle. Sorry, but this very funny book has been short-changed.
