Passable childrens drama January 6, 2009 I came to this series having never seen it before (my parents wouldn't let us watch ITV). br /br /One of the refreshing things about 1970's productions is the lack of political correctness. This allows writers to represent more credible historical relationships between men and women.br /br /The early plots are quite interesting, and the larger than life characters keep you interested. However after a while the storylines and action become predictable and repetative. In the second series, Gila von Weitershausen appears as Rowena, a headstrong maid marion style character. She looks the part, but her scenes are dubbed and it doesn't sound too good at times. br /br /Unless you are looking for nostaglia, I wouldn't particularly recommend this one. I have no doubt that 70's children would have loved it, but would todays kids? I'm not convinced. br /br /br /br /
Wonderful!!! July 7, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
A fantastic day has arrived at long last. "Arthur of the Britons" available to watch whenever I like! Back to the days of my middle childhood when the long walk from school could not go quickly enough, switch on the TV and get ready to watch. The DVD of the 2 series has not disappointed. It is still as fresh and excitibg as it was in the early 70s. The cast capture a realistic impression of what life must have been like for the Celts. Nothing is spared. It is only looking at it again that I realise it was quite adult in some of the themes and scriptwriting. A delight to be able to watch again and again. I promise you'll always come back to it quite regularly.
AT LAST!! April 29, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I too have been waiting years for this to come out. I was adicted back in the 70s, was delighted when I saw it available in the right region and I certainly wasnt disappointed when it arrived. It's brought back a host of memories and although the colour is somewhat dated, it still brings a smile to my lips. If you loved it then, you'll love it now.
A Powerful Memory April 24, 2008 27 out of 28 found this review helpful
For many of us of a certain age, the release of AOTB on DVD has brought some powerful but half forgotten childhood memories to the surface. It really did surprise me how well I remembered some of the episodes, despite having watched them only once three decades ago. That is in itself a great tribute to the story telling. What I did not remember so well - because I was too young to appreciate it fully at the time - was how subtle and literate much of the writing was. The Seventies really was the Golden Age of British Television writing. There is nothing of the same quality here today - especially in "children's television", which was how AOTB was categorised. It was in fact a very grown up version of history, avoiding on the one hand the fairy tale fantasy of Arthurian Romance, and, on the other, the equally unrealistic ultra-grunge that undermines some recent versions. This Arthur is indeed a hero, but his heroism lies in the fact that, when he decides to do the right thing, there is a real possibility that he might have done the opposite: if he spares someone, it means something precisely because the initial instinct of everyone involved was to kill that person. This Dark Ages mindset is wholly credible. Equally credible is the look of the thing. Oliver Tobias, Michael Gothard, Jack Watson, and, of course - compulsory in any Seventies television series - Brian Blessed all look like hardened warriors who could have persuaded other men to follow them. A very strong guest cast includes Tom Baker, the lovely Catherine Schell, Alfie Bass, a superb Clive Revill, Dave Proswe, a young Sally "Tiswas" James, Gila von Weitersahausen, Bernard Bresslaw, and the future Sir Michael Gambon - the last two of whom seem to be sharing the same blond wig! There are flaws - budgetary constraints are obvious, not least when Arthur raises an army that totals nine horsemen, but despite, or perhaps because of them, one soon finds oneself so deep in Arthur's world that one cannot help thinking, "This is how it could have been". Everyone involved should be proud of themselves and it would be great if a younger generation could be introduced to this superb example of British television at its best.
Wow Wonderful wonderful wonderful at LAST April 2, 2008 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
I recieved my copy on Satruday, already watched it twice, with a smile on my face wider than the English channel. I have been transported +35 years in to the past. I remember watching this programme every Sunday night first on Granda then half an hour later on HTV. Time has not deminished its luster or its magic. Not only was the action fantastic, the dialogue fantastic and the story lines amazing, I had forgotten just how much morality there was in it. br /I have already ordered another copy for my god children, it may even get them off the play-station.br /I have to say a huge thankyou to who ever made this available on DVD my old video (from the 80's rpt) was fast fading. I think it may be time to go and watch again, still 35 years on and Kia (Michael Gothard) is still the best looking man ever!!! I need another Fix.
