Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Outstanding cast, not so good script   August 23, 2008
The actors are excellent, particularly Alex Guinness as a brain-damaged war veteran, who hardly says a word but whose body-language conveys much. The film tries to combine comedy with sad memories of comrades and relatives killed in the Second World War in a group of ill-matched people visiting war graves in France. The comedy is the more successful aspect, especially Jeanne Moreau as a lively and tarty woman who "served" two of the visiting elderly veterans during the war. Most of the characters emerge as caricatures such as grumpy old men and a shrewish wife, which diminishes the impact of the sadder parts of the film.

I first watched this when it was released on TV in the UK in 1993. Fortunatley I taped it as I knew it would be something special, simply by looking at the cast. It was and still is one of the most moving, funny and uplifting films I have ever seen. It is a one off special and I'm amazed it has taken 15 years to release! Buy it and you'll not be disappointed. All my family love it and it is a firm favourite. Fantastic!
