Amazon.co.uk Review A slow burning, yet entirely gripping, mobster film, IAmerican Gangster/I pits Denzel Washington?s Frank Lucas against Russell Crowe?s law enforcer Richie Roberts. Spread over a necessarily prolonged running time, their story is then brutally, expertly, told. P And while IAmerican Gangster/I isn?t in the league of prime Scorsese and Coppolla classics (such as IGoodfellas/I and IThe Godfather/I), it?s the nearest we?ve come in quite some time to something of that ilk. It?s all based on a true story, which does mean you need to forgive it some of its obvious narrative conventions, yet this also lends it a gravitas that the film eagerly makes the most of. P It?s great too to see British director Ridley Scott tackling meatier material again. This is the man, after all, who gave us IBlade Runner/I, IAlien/I and IGladiator/I, and he duly delivers with IAmerican Gangster/I. His finest work it isn?t, but an engrossing, explosive and hard-as-nails drama it absolutely is. P What?s more, IAmerican Gangster/I is powered by two of the finest leading men working in Hollywood right now, and it?s terrific to see Washington and Crowe on top form here. And while in cinematic terms it?s hardly a film that treads new ground, it?s nonetheless a proper, grown-up and engrossing movie, and a very good one at that. --IJon Foster/I

SUPERB EXTREMELY IMPRESSIVE, DENZEL AT HIS BEST 6 STARS December 8, 2008 Ladies and gentlemen if you are a fan of gangster movies, this is a must watch. I didn't believe it was possible but it has happened; A film has finally arrived, which can realistically compared to Scarface, The Godfather, Casino etc.br /This high budget and beutifully directed film has an amazing story line which catches you from start to finish, Denzel Washington the main character in the movie is perfectly suited to the Dominating gangster role which he plays. br /This film really is in another league compared to the current day gangster films, it has class style and a gripping story line, well well worth the money. If you have not had the luxury of seeing this superb film at the cinema, then I woud reccommend that you buy this great film.
I was bored by this 2.5 hour movie November 23, 2008 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
This ganster movie from the great (or at least he used to be) Ridley Scott is a star-driven, big-budget prestige picture that's inordinately dull. American Gangster begins with a witty scene and ends with a punchy series of title cards, but the long middle of this 160-minute movie fails to engage as it plods through procedure and fails to develop characters. br /br /br /Jersey cop Richie Roberts (Crowe), depicted as one of the last honest cops in a time of widespread police corruption, gets picked to lead the Narcotics Squad tracking down Denzel Washington (Lucas). br /br /br /Inflated talk of American Gangster as a modern masterpiece--or even an Oscar-worthy picture--ignores the fact that there's not a single memorable setpiece in the film. br /br /I fear Ridley Scott is going down the Oliver Stone/ Woody Allen route of i was great once but now i cant seem to direct a decent movie.br /Scott is not really on form in this movie, and the period piece feels more like an expensive day of "dress up" (cue "Across 110th Street"!) than a gritty, street-level drama. br /br /br /Washington and Crowe plod through the movie looking like characters from their previous movies, though sparks do finally fly when the actors share a scene at picture's end. The best that can be said of Steven Zaillian's ho-hum script does not work. Dialogue is average and the plot is silly. Just how did Denzel Wasgington get American soldiers to hide narcotics in the coffins of the dead soldiers in Vietnam?br /br /5/10.Brendan Clarke
