Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
A mainstream Hollywood actor who seems committed to igniting science fiction features, Will Smith chalked up another sizeable hit in the shape of II Am Legend/I, the latest cinematic adaptation of Richard Matheson?s book of the same name. P This time, Smith plays Robert Neville, the last man on an Earth emptied by a deadly virus that he continues to try and find a working vaccine for. With just his dog for company, and the fear of the vampires that haunt the night never far away, II Am Legend/I quickly establishes itself as a taut, highly watchable blockbuster, with plenty of reasons to gnaw at your nail. P Where II Am Legend/I really scores is in the excellent first half. The scenes of a deserted New York are quite staggering, and it?s also to Smith?s immense credit that he holds the attention even though for the most part he?s the only person on the screen. It?s a quite wonderful opening hour that the film enjoys, and one that easily stands repeat viewings alone. P The back half of II Am Legend/I is, almost inevitably, not quite the match of what?s gone before, as the threats of the night don?t, when you finally see them, live up to expectations. Nonetheless, for Smith?s performance, and the sheer quality of the build up, II Am Legend/I can stand side-by-side with the last take on the story, the Charlton Heston-starrer IThe Last Man On Earth/I. Take either home, and you?re in for a rollicking good night in front of the telly. --IJon Foster/I

1 out of 5 stars Unoriginal and in the end pretty laughable   January 3, 2009
This film steals concepts from many other films and sellotapes them together to make this flimsy end product. The isolation Smith's character suffers, the conversations with his dog is reminiscent of of Castaway where Hanks talks to his football. A deadly virus spreads and almost destroy civilisation hmmn... there have been several recent films similar to this. 28 days later? 28 weeks later? Yes, yes I know it is based on a graphic novel but this film still feels wholly unnecessary. Clearly it was made because of the success of those recent films and it makes it feel all too familiar and unoriginal.br /br /The best thing about it is the special effects- seeing an abandoned New York is pretty cool. Unfortunately that doesn't give the film any substance and the second half of the film descends into mediocrity. Seeing how Smith's character deals with being the last man gives the film a little life. However, it soon becomes a silly horror/thriller with zombie vampires *yawn* that has been done a lot (and recently!) The ending is predictable and tiresome. Will Smith's performance is okay but has a pretty poor script to work with. This film is a waste of time apart from some impressive effects as previously mentioned (apart from the cartoon zombies) In conclusion, *yawn*

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant - a Legend!   December 23, 2008
When I read the book, I was really impressed.br /When I saw that there was a movie coming out, I thought 'brilliant, another rip off book - movie!'br /But when I saw it, it was fantastic!br /I didn't like it when Sam, (the dog), dies, but it was a fantastic movie!br /I advise anyone who enjoyed;br /br /Richard Mathson's I Am Legend - the book.br /Resident Evil.br /I am Omega.br /And other trivia, to try it out!br /You won't be disappointed!

3 out of 5 stars Terrifying view of what the future might hold   December 23, 2008
I'd heard a lot about this film before I watched it so I went in with high epectations, and as the Arctic Monkey's quite rightly said 'anticipation can only set you up for dissapointment'. That's not to say this was not a very good film though - it just wasn't what I wanted it to be.br /br /Set in the future, a supposed 'cure for cancer' goes wrong, releasing a virus into the world not too unlike rabies, that kills most of the population (humans and various animals) out right. Those that aren't killed mostly become transformed by the virus into savage, unintelligent animal-like versions of themselves that are burned by UV light (so must stay out ofsunlight). A very small number of people have full immunity from the disease (including Robert Neville - played brilliantly by Will Smith - but would you expect anything else from the man?). Neville seems to be the last human left in existence and is now despearte to find a cure for the disease that has wiped out the whole of humanity. br /br /The film is exciting, moving and (surprisingly) believeable. The scenes where Neville is alone in New York, sending out radio messages just incase there is anyone else out there to hear him, are very powerful, and manage to capture the fear and loneliness of how it must feel to really be the last person alive. The scene where Sam dies is sad, and as the viewer we care enought to sit on the edge of your seat fingers crossed, willing her to be alright, and of course, the ending is very well done, but I won't talk about that as I don't wnat to spoil the film for any of those who havent seen it.br /br /I am Legend isn't my favourte in the world, not one I want to watch again in a hurry, but thats not saying it wasnt a good movie. Give it a try, within the first 10 minutes you'll be hooked. And it may just make you appreciate the world that little bit more.

3 out of 5 stars A little overrated methinks...   November 30, 2008
I Am Legend has a few good points but loads of bad ones. br /The acting is terrific, Will Smith is very talented. The storyline is very good too but it's just a shame they didn't manage to pull it off the way I thought they would.br /It was the zombies that really dissapointed me. Once they came out, it turned into some action-horror, making me forget how calm it was before-hand. I know that was the storyline but couldn't they reveal to us what the zombies looked like at in the ending? That way, I'd be a little more intrested of finding out what happened in the end.br /I think the nobleness of Will Smith's character ruined the ending. It would have been so much better if he got out of his house along with the woman and her child.br /I thought the bit when he had to kill his dog was really, really sad. I nearly cried and I never cry at films!br /Nonetheless this is a movie you should consider on watching, just when you watch it, make sure your mind is open!

3 out of 5 stars Epic...but disappointing   November 26, 2008
I had high hopes for I am legend. In the end i was slightly disappointed. I like Will Smith and found he did a great job acting in the this film. As a viewer you are intrigued for the story to unfold and find out why he is alone. However, I thought the special effects were quite poor considering the size of the this movie, and also felt the ending was quite commercial in the sense that it was wrapped up very quickly (and to my mind quite boringly).br /br /This isn't a bad film but it is nothing new, but i feel it was marketed and hyped to be an amazing film. Disappointing for that reason.
