Best sitcom of all time December 26, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Absolutely addictive. Larry David has made this masterpiece by introducing us to the most believable characters, whilst other sitcoms reek of the funny, but not at all realistic protagonists. Larry David is obviously the star, but Cheryl, Jeff, Susie and co. all make the show even more enjoyable. sometimes, too much curb can make you want to have Larry's attitude towards life, which is probably a good thing. I highly recommend this show to anyone who has a sense of humour, likes intelligent comedy or just wants to see something that's different and appealing.
Anyone can be confident with a full head of hair. But a confident bald man - there's your diamond in the rough. November 18, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
HBO easily makes my favorite American shows aprt from the west wing. The Wire being the best drama ever made and Curb you Enthusiasm easily my favorite American comedy. In fact its so far clear of those 2 and half..every one loves.. king of... well, nothing whatso ever, that nothing american is comparible to Curb. Even Seinfeld, which was co-created and written by Larry david falls a long way short of my affection for curb.br /Its hard to review this without moronically gushing about how frickin good it is and wanting to scream "you simply have to watch this, its just simply brilliant". Yes, very hard indeed to keep that in. br /However its not for everyone, if you watched Norbit and thought that was funny... 'Curbs' not for you.br /If you like 2 pints of Larger and a packet of crap.... Again not for youbr /Curb makes you squirm! Ricky Gervais's Office uses the curb style squirm with great effect, but, as much as I loved the office, I'd always reach for a CYE dvd first.br /Larry David plays himself, but he plays the side of himself that we all keep quiet. The Sociopath. He says the things we all keep in and elaborately gets himself in and sometimes out self created dilemmas. If you like intelligent, well written and beautifulled structured comedy, you owe it to yourself to give Curb a lot of time.. it is just simply the best comedy show ever.
Simply the Best!! October 8, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Larry David, simply put, IS a genius. This series marks the beginning of a new era of comedy. Sad to say it's ratings do not fairly reflect the sheer perfection and success of this show. Gargantuan perfomances from David, Hines, Garlin and the fabulous shrieking and vulgar Susie Essman.Guest artists from Ted Danson to a quirky and hilarious guest appearance from Steve Coogan give masterclasses in understated and intelligent comedy.br /The journey through series one to six is a torturous but gutbustingly funny experience. Through the myopic eyes of David we see the faults of others and the vaccuous world he resides while accepting and sometimes applauding his own glaring faults. A man of honesty and insights who deals with others the way we could only hope to.br /Hines performance as his long suffering wife, Cheryl for me is the jewel in this show. She holds David's perfomance and perfectly compliments his tempestuousness with a quiet and dainty strength. You absolutely believe this crazy complicated guy exists because of the excellent scenes played with Cheryl Hines.br /If you go through life laughing without the guilt and pleasure of laughing with (and at) Mr Larry David... then that's pretty, PRETTY, PRETTY sad.
Utter Tripe!! September 12, 2008 5 out of 49 found this review helpful
Oh bejaysus!!br /br /Never have I been more disappointed in my whole life (well that's a fib actually. I was hoping that Heather Mills would bleed Smug McCartney dry, but that didn't happen. Shame.)br /br /This is poorer than a somelier in a Paris restaurant. How can people sit through this when there's paint to watch drying? THAT's how bad it is. About as funny as a lumbar puncture!!
Painful to watch?! September 8, 2008 6 out of 44 found this review helpful
I borrowed this from a friend, and after watching three episodes I found myself really greatful that I hadn't spent hard earned money on it. What a misleading description - "Comedy". I found that I was cringing when I wathed it, and not because of the characters embarrassing predicaments he forces himself into, but becuase of the lack of willingness to move on from a moment that they obviously found amusing filming but failed to realise it gave very little enjoyment to the audience. (As all comedians know, you can't milk the same joke too long, it just ceases to be funny).br /This, though I understand is unscripted to a certain point, just doesn't work in this format, and generally speaking improvisational comedy works better if the people in it are funny and have a certain level of understanding of comic timing, dramatic irony, and a number of other factors that contrbute to performing comedy off the cuff. I feel that rather than highlight the humour found in his previously written work just proves with time, anyone can perfect a joke but very few people have the natural talent for humour, and unfortunatly he isn't one of them.
