1 out of 5 stars Poor picture quality, deleted scene   January 6, 2009

If you recorded this digitally from the TV, you'd be better off burning your own copy. Not only is the "Down Town" sequence missing, but the picture quality is unacceptably poor, with noticeable compression artifacts and pixellation. br /br /Five stars for the show, one star for the DVD production.

5 out of 5 stars No singing please   January 3, 2009

This is an excellent twist on the very familiar 'Pride and Prejudice'. Just one thing spoils this dvd release. In the second tv episode, Jemima Rooper, unable to play piano, entertains her hosts by singing 'Down Town',(a song her Mother used to sing to her when she was little, and bear in mind this was early 1800's). On the dvd, this two minute scene has been cut (a copyright issue so I'm told), quite making nonsense of the scenes just before and after. Otherwise this is excellent, it is well thought out and acted, and the actors well chosen. It is of course much more ammusing than PP. Pride and Prejudice and time travel in one neat package.

5 out of 5 stars Down Town is back!   January 2, 2009

For some reason one of the funniest sequences in this wonderful comedy was cut when this dvd was released - Amanda singing Down Town to Mr Darcy and friends. There was a bit of an outcry, and it seems to have done some good because it's been restored! It encapsulates everything that is magic about this show. Jemima Rooper was born to play Amanda - her comic timing is spot on and she's very lovable. Mr Bingley makes me laugh every time I watch this scene, and Mr Darcy's face - at first horrified, and then secretly amused - is a great turning point in the love story. I don't know what they were thinking of cutting it before but it appears pester power has worked!!

5 out of 5 stars SWOON!   December 27, 2008
Truly excellent comedy drama / romance. Even if you've never heard of Jane Austen before you'll enjoy this sparking and very well acted tv series. It follows a woman called Amanda who get 'stuck' inside Pride and Prejudice. I read the book after watching this series, and it made me realise two things: Jane Austen is a very clever woman, and the writer of this, Guy Andrew, is very clever too! The dialogue and situations in this are very authentic to Jane Austen, but there are some very original twists (Mr Collins getting 'assaulted' at the ball springs to mind!). The end brought a tear to my eye. br /br /I just loved it! I would love to see the writer and this cast now do a 'straight' adaptation of Pride and Prejudice!

2 out of 5 stars Not my cuppa tea!   December 6, 2008

I thoroughly enjoy settling down to enjoy a good period piece on TV, and really tried to enjoy this too, but failed on each of three attempts! I realize that it is meant to be original and funny, but it just irritated the hell out of me! The lead character was no doubt meant to not fit in to the time period, but I found the whole concept did not work for me and was tedious to watch, or rather endure. Each time I lasted about 10/15 mins, then it was, "This is ridiculous and irritating, let's watch something else." I certainly didn't get lost, I found the whole experience nauseating!!
