3 out of 5 stars "There are many shades of grey "   November 18, 2008
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

In my part of the world (Yorkshire) waz is a verb. If you waz something you throw it away ( hopefully disposing of it in an environmentally vigilant manner) but apparently Waz is really an equation regarding genetics. And it's that equation that is at the heart of this film. I won't go into detail lest I give too much away . Neither is Waz a horror film. It,s pretty gruesome in parts but it's more a gritty psychological thriller than anything .Comparisons with Seven [1996] and Saw [2004] are apt though . Here we have a serial killer making people deal with the consequences of their own actions ,distorted through the killers own perverted filter. br /Helen Westcott( Melissa George) has just been seconded onto the force in an unnamed American city ( It looks like New York in some shots though much of the film was shot in Ireland) When a mutilated corpse turns up with a message carved into the flesh she is paired up with gruff detective Eddie Argo ( Stellan Skarsgard) and it transpires the victim was the pregnant girlfriend of a notorious gang member. Eddie seems to have something going on with one gang member Daniel (Ashley Walters) and maybe knows more about the case than he is letting on. As he says "there are many shades of grey " though he actually puts it more colourfully than that.....ironically enough.br /Helen is the eyes of the audience for this film .We learn things and see things fresh pretty much as she does. At times she looks more appalled at the attitudes of her male colleagues than the grisly pile of bodies. Needless to say Waz is not a barrel of laughs and the films grainy cinematography ( courtesy of Morton Soborg) adds to it's gloomy ambience. The performances are very good with Skarsgard capably nuancing his role as a man weighed down by his guilt and the things he has seen .Melissa George shows like she did in Paradise Lost that she is an actress worth keeping an eye on and there is a an effective cameo role for Selma Blair. br /Director Tom Shankland says in the interview available in the extras ( Along with deleted scenes and commentaries ) that Waz is about altruism and redemption as much as it is about revenge. I can see his point but I feel that pretty much Waz is a film about making people pay for their actions and choices by understanding implicitly the suffering they have caused. Shades of grey again It's cheapened slightly by the supposedly dramatic twist that I saw coming a mile off and a noble act of sacrifice at the end that just doesn't wash. br /None the less this is a serious , thoughtful , studied take on the serial killer /thriller genre .Very much worth watching once though I doubt it would be a film many would want to watch again and again . That does,nt mean you should waz it though . br /br /br /

1 out of 5 stars Just horrible   November 3, 2008

Put quite simply, this is EVERYTHING that is wrong with these type of movies. Its badly acted, amaturely made, poorly told, slow, exploitive and made with a complete lack of compassion so its impossible to feel any sort of feelings, even for the supposed victims.br /Story centres around 2 detectives who are searching for a serial killer with a fondness for carving equations into their victims chests. As they begin to realise what these equations mean, it becomes clear that the killer has a deep personal motive and that these murders are not random.br /No sorry, didn't like this film at all. Aside from the flaws i mentioned earlier, the supposed 'twist' at the end is quite frankly ludicrous and the question of 'what would you do if you had to kill the one you loved or be killed?' is handled very clumsly, to the point of 'oh, who cares?'br /In summation, if you like a rough, gore-filled, exploitive, no brain horror-thriller then this is for you. If not, stick with the more respectable se7en or saw.

More like Se7en than Saw. It has more subtlety to it than your typical "gorno" film. Actually it isn't gorno at all. It is quite intelligently handled and it's the psychological premise of this thriller that gives it substance and originality.

1 out of 5 stars How do scripts like this make it to film ?!?!   August 24, 2008

Where to start !?!? Stellan Skarsgard's overacting and cliched character really is the worst thing about this film. But there's loads more to complain about ! The plot is thin, it looks like it was shot on a camcorder (slightly better than mobile phone quality), and the claim that it could be "the most violent film ever" is phenominally bad marketing. It just a really bad cash-in on "Saw", and I mean bad.

4 out of 5 stars Strikingly unusual   August 22, 2008

br /Considering that Waz passes itself off as a mainstream horror movie, I was really surprised at how different it was. The premise is basically- how much pain would you endure to save a loved one? Pretty sick, huh? Don't worry, though; even though it says "Is this the most violent film ever?" on the DVD case, it's not very violent at all in comparison to something like Hostel. br /br /Melissa George delivers a surprising performance as a cute rookie cop, but it's Selma Blair who makes the impact, playing the victim-turned-killer with superb competence. Overall, Waz makes for an OK night in, and it's far better than what some reviewers are making out. However, maybe it's worth waiting until it's about a fiver.br /
