Amazon.co.uk Review
You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And iIron Man/i is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, iIron Man/i puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quite hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. --iRobert Horton/i

4 out of 5 stars Roll on BananaMan...   January 8, 2009
It seems no summer can pass anymore without a superhero movie coming out, be it SuperMan, BatMan, SpiderMan, IceMan, the combined X-Men and now it's IronMan...surely they're running out of powers these `Men' can have? I shudder to think what's in store for us next; PlasticMan, CopperMan, Mobilephone Man who knows? I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for the release of BananaMan! br /Anyway, this one is actually really good, it's not as slapstick as X-Men or Spiderman and although it's got its comic moments, they're not complete cheese, it's more of a Dark Knight but not as dark if that makes sense.br / br /In a nutshell, the inherited owner of one of the worlds leading weapons manufacturers, Tony Stark (Downey Jr) is in the middle East area to show off his companies' latest bomb/missile when he gets kidnapped by terrorists and held at ransom unless he recreates said bomb in their warehouse, which just so happens to have every nut and bolt needed to do this. Convenient.br /Instead of doing this though, Stark cunningly manages to make a full body suit made out of some sort of unmentioned metal, powered by a simple magnetic coil he also fashions and blasts his way out of there! Lucky break.br /After crashing the duff suit in the desert when the power runs out, he gets rescued and flown back to the real world.br /When cleaned up, he decides to make version 2 of the suit, which has a better battery life and go fast stripes, and uses it to fight the terrorist who captured him and pretty much crime in general, which lets face it, is usually what these superheroes do.br / br /Of course a man banging about in an indestructible suit which flies and has sonic blasters for guns isn't going to run into much bother on the streets, but unfortunately for him his original suit gets recovered, and repaired, and worn, by his new nemesis.br / br /As an actioner goes, this is really impressive, the FX are amazing as you would expect, and the acting is pretty good, thanks to the good cast. Gwyneth moseys in and out half heartedly - probably just done this flick for a pay check, but you've got Jeff Bridges who's reliable and an odd appearance from Jon Favreau, who coincidently directed it (An odd choice I must admit considering he did `Elf' and the atrocious `Made') but he does well here, keeps the cheese off and injects the sort of snap that you would expect from his mates in `Swingers'. One last nod to Downey Jr, who seems to be on a bit of a purple patch at the minute after Tropic Thunder and you've got a fun hour and a half.br / br /No doubt this is the beginning of a few sequels, which isn't a bad thing, and as far as the DVD goes, it's allright, the basic version has deleted scenes, trailers and a Stan Lee section. Go the extra mile and get the `Ultimate Edition' and this give you massive making of docs, some special FX makings of which are cool and a funny Downey Jr screen test. Is it worth the extra tenner? Probably not. Just get the cheapy, the 5...1 cranked up, pop corn on and enjoy!br /

1 out of 5 stars What is this?   January 4, 2009

I thought Iron Man was horrible. As a fan of superheroes such as Batman, Superman and Spider-Man, I was actually looking forward to watching this film. When I saw it, it couldn't have been worse. The first half an hour was good, but towards the film went way over the top with stupid machines that puts on his suit, a ridiculous plot and altogether it was a horribly executed film. If there was 0 stars, I would give it to this.

1 out of 5 stars I don't like iron man for a few reasons...   January 3, 2009

People said Iron Man is brillent, now I not a big Iron Man fan so I waited for the DVD to come out in late 2008. I leaved at the 26 minute of the film. This was appluing and the worst comic book ever, in fact the worst film ever I have three reasons why I hated it.br /br /Reason 1:br /SPOLIER(DON'T NOT READ IF YOU HAVN'T WATCHED IT)br /So the start how Iron Man became Iron Man was a explosien. Of course he didn't know it. Not the best ending and that stunt was big but not BANG. So the fairess wasn't good and that's the end of spolier.br /br /Reason 2:br /The rating of 12 well without the first sex scene and I thought went a litle futher and some violence wasn't approchient. This should be 15 for moderate violence and some sexual nature. Even though it's a comic book. br /br /The final reason:br /Well the acting and I don't recoinset that but it was silly and bad. It was a explosen that acted like a ice cream van coming. Bad acting and awful plot details to come and that's why I leaved to Watch Hellboy 2. So Iron Man was rubbish.br /br /If you like bad singing you'll love Iron Manbr /Hopefully there won't be a Iron Man 2 br /If there's is call it Iron Man 2: The rubbish superherobr /

4 out of 5 stars Who'd have thought it?   January 3, 2009

When I heard Robert Downey Jr had been cast as Iron Man I was intrigued. And I have to say he really pulls it off giving us one of the most refreshingly original takes on a 'superhero' yet. He has such an abundance of charisma on screen and he really looked to have buffed up for the role. He manages to embody geek, playboy, morally ambiguous businessman, action man and philanthropist in the right quantities. I also liked the political message of the film as it weaves in the war in Afghanistan, American foreign policy and the corrupt nature of the military-industrial machine, perhaps a brave stance to take. It seems to me that superhero movies in the 21st century are less about superheroes who are perfect role models and more about ordinary people put into extraordinary situations. Even Superman has struggled to find a place for himself up against Spiderman, Iron Man, Batman and the Fantastic 4. The message seems to be: it's up to us to play the cards we are dealt. Iron Man is an excellent example of a man who felt comfortable with his place in the world, his playboy lifestyle, his boy toys and suddenly gets confronted with the consequences of what his company does, sees what he would not be able to see on a report. He then decides to use his talents to change things when it might be easier not to - and that is surely the most valuable lesson any superhero can teach us? To stand up for what is right no matter what the personal cost? A cracking film...

3 out of 5 stars Great film   January 2, 2009
The latest jaunt from the Marvel universe is certainly a well built affair. It features a good combination of action and yakking and contains some very strong performances - not least from it's leads, Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow. The script is a step above the norm with a central character that does not suffer from a case of the `overly righteous' bug that seems to infect these people. In fact, I would go so far as to say that Iron Man is definitely one of the better Marvel efforts (i.e. a lot closer to Blade than Spiderman 3)... only problem is that for two hours I was bored to tears. Insanely bored. Chairman of the Bored. Everyone around me was having fun and enjoying the movie, I was thinking about how weird my trainers looked at a certain angle - I can't explain it. The film certainly has it's weak points and I definitely don't like the way it pandered to my liberal hypocrisies in booing militarism whilst applauding a man in a metal suit beating the crap out of people (we all know superheroes should be right-wingers and not finger waggers), but none of that has stopped me from enjoying this sort of film before. Maybe it's because the variety of superhero origin movies is actually quite limited, we all know that with great power comes great yadda yadda yadda and so on. Maybe it's because following the excellent Batman Begins makes the others just look a bit second rate. Maybe the time afforded to story development in Heroes has ruined all this? I really wanted to like this film and I can see why everyone else (and I mean everyone) did and, like E.T., I know that Iron Man is a good film, I just couldn't care less about it. br /br /
