3 out of 5 stars The Lord of the Forbidden Narnia Kingdom Ring   August 15, 2008
4 out of 6 found this review helpful

With anyone but Jackie Chan and Jet Li, this film would be forgettable. The story and the production blend elements of Journey to the West, Narnia, and Lord of the Rings in an unremarkable western take on wuxia, the traditional Chinese marital arts drama. Apparently first developed as a bed-time story for the American screenwriter's son, the plot has a certain unaffected charm that manages to shine through the film's over-polished veneer and poor choices in casting. No one could possibly believe that such slight, rail-thin women could put a whipping on anything but a salad bar, and it's hard to work-up any sympathy for Michael Angarano as the point-of-view character, who with his sad hang-dog face and whiny demeanor fairly invites the bullying thats heaped on him. His transformation from a pasty wimp unlikely to fight his way out of a room of kindergarteners into a kung-fu warrior is embarrassingly laughable. br /br /Ultimately it's Jet and Jackie that make this a film worth watching. Their fluid movement and comedic timing leave the other fighters looking clumsy and overly earnest. The highlight of the film is the pair's extended fight scene, an amazing pairing of talents not likely to be seen elsewhere in martial arts cinema for some time to come. See it now while you can, but be prepared for lots of incredulous eyeball rolling and spot-the-Rings-and-Narnia-references. br /br /#

5 out of 5 stars great fun   July 30, 2008

So Jackie Chan plus Jet Li, and the outcome is magical. Being a big fan of both actors, I think this is a very good movie. The story itself, being a fantasy, is much better than other Kung Fu movies, and more entertaining. This is not a kind of movie you watch if you want something serious, it combines comedy, with a lot of fun, and of course great martial arts display. Very enjoyable to watch, and both Chan and Li appear to be on top of their game in this movie. Very nice indeed.

3 out of 5 stars Kung Fu for Kids   July 17, 2008

Two of cinema's finest martial arts experts, Jackie Chan and Jet Li are finally together in a movie and if you love kung fu movies, you are most likely going to enjoy this.br /br /I love films like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers and Enter the Dragon but haven't watched a great deal of other martial arts films, but I love action films and one thing I can definitely say about `The Forbidden Kingdom' is that it is full of action and is some of the most impressive that I've ever seen. The story is extremely daft and made me think it was more aimed at a younger audience as if it wasn't for all the fighting sequences, which aren't all that violent (well, not gory anyway) and is very over the top, I'd say that this was a kids film and is basically a live-action version of the cartoon Jackie Chan Adventures. Some of the scenery in this film is also some of the most beautiful I've seen in a film.br /br /I did really enjoy this film from start to finish as it was very easy watching where I didn't have to think about it at all, I just sat back enjoyed the action. I probably wouldn't watch it again but it is definitely worth the trip to the cinema to see or renting when it is available. There's plenty of fighting, laughs and excitement that I imagine any kid will love. br /

4 out of 5 stars Chan and Li team up in a good fantasy   July 16, 2008
Jackie Chan (Rush Hour) and Jet Li (Hero) team up in Rob Minkoff's fantasy adventure about a teenager who is brought to a kingdom to return a magical staff to an ancient warrior to restore peace and harmony.br /br /In the run up to this film, there was the much anticipated pairing of two of Chinese cinemas finest actors in Chan and Li and neither disappointed in a good fantasy adventure.br /br /Though the plot runs on a few cliches, it is exciting, tense and intriguing viewing with usual Chinese cinema style fighting, very fast and flowing, chases and amazing effects to conform to the genre, and also a bit of humour as well. There were moments when you may feel yourself turning away as a cliche becomes unbelievably corny and predictable but the fights and plot will have your eyes glued to the screen for almost 2 hours of running time.br /br /The direction by Minkoff is good, bizarre but intriguing in justifying the character's actions and reactions. I've personally never been a big fan of CGI, but when used here is used to maximum effect making it a spectacle of bright lights and magic.br /br /I wondered after watching; whether the film would have been better in Chinese with subtitles, just to add a bit more intensity and surprise to certain scenes, just an after thought really. But still good in English, all actors did well, though Angarano plays a complete teenage stereotype I found it embarrassing to watch at some points.br /br /Though critics have said the plot does follow an American young hero who must save the day and defeat the odds etc, there is still magic and interest to the tale, plus the chorography and visual effects add to the intensity of the situations and if you look past all the cliches then it is an enjoyable fighting fantasy film.br /br /8/10br /

4 out of 5 stars JACKIE CHAN JET LI TOGETHER AT LAST IN A FILM THAT IS FUN AND VERY ENTERTAINING   July 13, 2008
1 out of 6 found this review helpful

It feels like it should have happened before, but this really is the first collaboration between Jackie Chan and Jet Li, and everything else in this fun but supremely silly kung fu romp is overshadowed by that fact. Sure, it's advertised like a family adventure movie, but at heart this is the lost lovechild of the Shaw Brothers' '70s output and bonkers '80s TV show Monkey, a crazy tale redeemed by two martial arts masters thoroughly enjoying themselves.br /br /The plot sees modern teen Jason, Sky High's Michael Angarano, mysteriously transported to a mythical China by a magical fighting staff. There, he meets drunken beggar Yu Lan (Jackie Chan), who tells him that he must deliver the staff to the Monkey King, long ago turned to stone by the evil Jade Warlord (Collin Chou). With the help of the vengeful Golden Sparrow (Liu Yifei) and the taciturn - obviously - Silent Monk (Jet Li) they must go west, beat the bad guy, reawaken the good guy and save the day.br /br /The plot's a mish-mash of Chinese legends made Western-friendly, with little nods to the likes of The Karate Kid and Pirates Of The Caribbean (Chan's costume is pure Cap'n Jack). Angarano's presence and the modern bookends are largely irrelevant, and the overlong running time doesn't help, the story bogged down in a succession of martial arts set-pieces that will bore small children as much as they thrill devotees. But then, at least part of the film's aim is to serve as a My First Kung Fu Movie, introducing newcomers to a largely defunct style of filmmaking - although the film's look is more Lord Of The Rings than the wonderfully scratchy Technicolor of the works that inspired it. In the end, however, it lives or dies on the action - and the two stars don't disappoint, either when sparring together or in taking on hordes of enemies under the direction of legendary fight choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping. Both appear to deliver a punch from A to B without bothering to pass any intervening points, and there's a clear onscreen sense of professional satisfaction in playing together at last, and perhaps a hint of rivalry as the blows flicker past. It looks like they're just having fun - perhaps that's all it's really about.br /
