Ah, there you are Darling. October 21, 2003 3 out of 9 found this review helpful
This used to be my favourite of the four series, but just recently the joke has worn just very slightly thin with series 4. Don't get me wrong, its still a mile above most other BBC comedy of the last 20 years (how does anyone laugh at anything in Keeping Up appearances?) but the writing isn't quite as sharp as the sublime series 3, or series 2.Nonetheless its crammed with memorable quotes and characters. Lord Flashheart makes another welcome appearance, and Baldrick's slug balancing act is excellent. Fry and Laurie provide comedy kudos (although Laurie's character George grates after a while), but the best bit of all is the final moment, where the big push over the top claims all but the top brass, in a surpirisingly moving moment. A great way to leave the series in truth, although I'd love some more. Blackadder in Space, anyone? Just me then.

Just the best! This is certainly the best Black Adder series of them all, and one of the comedy greats.

The fourth installment of the fantastic Blackadder series is as funny as a vegetable that has grown into a rude and amusing shape. Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson) is at his most cunning yet, while the hopelessly dim Lieutenant George (Hugh Laurie) and Private Baldrick (Tony Robinson) stand by for his orders. The stark raving mad General Melchett (Stephen Fry) and pen-pushing Captain Darling (Tim McInnery) dish out slightly insane orders such as walking slowly towards the enemy. Each episode is original and hilarious, from putting on a show at the London Palladium to being executed for shooting a pigeon. There are so many quotable quotes that one's mind becomes a whirl of jokes and catchphrases. From Melchett's Baah to Flashheart's Woof this is a hilarious video and in my opinion the best of the lot.

Is there any time or place that writers Richard Curtis and Ben Elton cannot place thoroughly believable characters? In this instance, its the Western Front, 1917. An utter joy (the series, that is). The supporting cast, particularly Tony Robinson, Hugh Laurie and Stephen Genius Fry, are impeccable. Rich with brilliant dialogue combined with incredibly creative incident- hot mud, dandruff and saliva, among other things- there is a real poignancy about this series. The absurdity of the events portrayed here work in a perfect blend of humour and cynicism that really reflect the madness of the war and those caught up in it. For me, the best of the four Blackadder outings.
BALL BOUNCINGLY FUNNY! November 11, 2001 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Blackadder Goes Forth stands along side every other series of Blackadder (yes that also includes The Black Adder) to make the finest comedy series' ever made. This series is set during World War I in 1917 and sees Captain Blackadder sharing a trench with Lt. George and Pte. Baldrick. They take their orders from the slightly insane General Melchett and the slimy Captain Darling. While most people feel that the last episode in this series is the best, my personal favourite is Major Star featuring Baldrick's impression of Charlie Chaplin. The DVD itself lacks any extra features which is criminal, but the series itself is worth every penny.
