1 out of 5 stars * SCOOBY POO *   February 20, 2003

I didn?t watch this by choice and I don?t usually like to write such short negative reviews as this but Scooby Doo really is up there with the worst that Hollywood has to offer. It?s also hard to understand who this movie was aimed at. True, my six and four year old nephews seemed to enjoy it but then when you are that age a prolonged farting competition between Shaggy and Scooby is probably very funny. However it also has some gay innuendo at the expense of Freddie Prinze?s character Fred and its cast seems very obviously aimed at the teen market (surely teenagers don?t have that poor a taste)? Of said cast the only performance I can recommend is that of Mathew Lillard as Shaggy who has the voice of the famous cartoon character down to a T. As for Scooby himself I was relatively unimpressed with the CGI canine and I am not at all surprised that Mike Myers decided not to pursue this project. This is a movie with no redeeming qualities and with a sequel planned I?d have to recommend that instead of Scooby Doo, you Scooby don?t.

4 out of 5 stars I would've got away with it if it wasn't for you pesky kids!   February 11, 2003

Like many people my age I was a big fan of Scooby Doo cartoons as a kid. After so many disappointing attempts by Hollywood to cash in on cartoon nostalgia (e.g. the Flintstones) I was a little apprehensive! However I was pleasantly surprised with this effort!

The computer graphics special effects (such as Scooby Himself) were very well done. One constant reminder of the original cartoons is Shaggy's voice, imitated excellently by Matthew Lillard (the true star of the film!). The way he interacts with Scooby is superb! You would hardly notice that Scooby is a computer animation if you based it on its believability within the scene! The interaction of these two is identical to the way it was in the Cartoons. They are as funny, as cowardly and as stupid! They really make this a 4 Star film! If they weren't as good this would be a 2 star film!

Basic plot of the film plays very much like an extended episode of the Cartoon! It starts towards the end of a typical Scooby Doo mystery. So right at the beginning you get to see all the classic stuff like the unmasking and the "if it wasn't for you pesky kids!" However, after Fred's continual gloating, putting all the other members of the group down and constantly receiving all the credit, the group break up (much to Shaggy's and Scooby's horror!) Is this the end of Mystery Inc?? Of course not! (Would be a very short film if it were!)

Individually, a year later, the team are invited to solve a Mystery at an Amusement Park called "Spooky Island!" (Typical name for a Scooby Doo mystery!)

We then get to see what the guys are like after the split! Happily, Scooby and Shaggy haven't changed a bit! Still best friends, still hanging out together and still always hungry (a scene in the camper van may let on to older viewers why this is!) Fred still has an ego that could sink the Titanic, Velma is still under appreciated and Daphne is determined to prove she isn't always going to be the kidnap victim!

The amusement park is owned by Rowan Atkinson's character. (Who over-acts really badly in this film and tries to make his character funnier than it actually is!) They need to solve the Mystery as to why all the Student visitors are turning into mindless zombies!

The island turns out to be overrun by what I assume are "invading monsters from another dimension". But the precise details don't matter. Suffice to say the team is lead through a set of events, which give the movie the opportunity to re-live some of the old Scooby-type scenes, including a "flash-back" appearance by Scrappy Doo.

I won't tell you the end, because it's so stupid, so silly, and so absolutely ridiculous, that you have to see it for yourself. Ex-Scooby fans will either be horrified or choke with laughter on their popcorn. I did the latter - it felt like the script was playing a massive joke on itself. It may be a case that the ending is "so bad it's good", but I still enjoyed it.

Overall I would recommend old Scooby fans see this movie.

4 out of 5 stars much, much better than the cinema release reviews   January 6, 2003

To tell you the truth I always hated the Scooby Doo cartoon series so when my kids insisted that I invest a hard earned 11 quid for the DVD I bargained on them at least washing the car a couple of times. The presence of the charming Sarah Michelle Geller in pink platform boots and a skimpy dress swayed the arguement in favour of the kids so investment was made. I've now seen it, with the kids of course, at least 4 or 5 times and i'm still enjoying it. The plot of course is thin but the introduction of some more interesting interplay between the characters away from the main storyline beefs up the film so it's not just a 15 minute cartoon extended to try to fill a 90 minute movie timescale.
All the best moments involve Shaggy and Scooby. Shaggy is brilliantly played and interacts pretty much seemlessly with the CGI Scooby and there are numerous scenes that appeal to adult and child alike. Scooby getting checked in at the airport, hanging out in the van in california, farting contests and quad bike chases are all very funny and nicely placed in the story sequence to give you just the right balance between the utterly ridiculous plot and some comic interludes.
Whenever things slow down, which tends to be when Shaggy and Scooby aren't involved, the likelyhood is that SMG will be on the scene for interest value for male audience members - unfortunately i doubt if Fred has the same effect for the female viewers. The only thing that really irritated me was Rowan Atkinson - he plays the boss of the amusement park and he tries too hard to be funny. all the other cast members play along with the cartoon's deadpan delivery and cardboard cutout characterisations and this largely works very well. RA tries to overcomplicate the character and, for me, this just made my teeth grind.
The picture quality is good and the sound quality is very good indeed making full use of the dolby 5.1 potential. The extras are OK and my only comment would be that I was surprised that some of the deleted scenes were not included in the main film. I'd love to see the version complete with these scenes as I'm sure it would make for a more enjoyable movie.
In conclusion this is far from being an oscar winning film but if you switch off your brain and sit down with the kids you'll find it hard not to be entertained.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent   November 26, 2002

Very good translation from cartoon to screen, the film is well-balanced. The writers/director have been brave enough to make the film a good step away from the usual pap that comes out of Hollywood - let me qualify that: it has decent special effects, it has paper-thin characters, but these have been chosen because it happens to complement the film as a whole, not because it gets more teenage bums on seats. Excellent acting by Shaggy, Freddie, Velma and Daphne.

4 out of 5 stars Great For the Kids!!   November 24, 2002

This DVD version is a bit of a gem really. Very entertaining from start to finish, everybody should find something here to enjoy. Based on the famous cartoon series of a few years back, this is a superb effort. The Scooby animation is brilliant, and its very funny too. The Scooby gang land on an island where they encounter numerous monsters and a haunted house. I dont wish to say much really because it needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is very good here. Ably supported by Freddie Prinz jnr and others they have a whale of a time in this movie. But the star really is Scooby. Great picture and sound make this a must buy; and the extras are superb too.
